To avoid a cursor in upper left corner black screen hang condition I performed the following steps I curated from different forums (Linuxmint, FOSS, etc.):
Assuming you have Windows 10/11 preloaded, you should make sure "Fast Boot" is disabled. From control panel, select System and Security. Select Power Options and then something like "What does power button do". Uncheck Fast Startuo option.
Now shutdown and use F10 to access BIOS. If this fails to work you may wish to try the following from CMD prompt: shutdown /r /o
Fro,m BIOS make sure secure boot is disabled. Move USB flash drive boot to top of priority list for boot options. While you are in there make sure the virtualization options are enabled. My BIOS was at current F.24 level. If not at F.24 perhaps flash to get latest firmware.
Save/Exit BIOS and restart with Linux MInt flash stick inserted.
Follow your normal Linux MInt install process and use the Noveau open source driver to be safe for starters.
Now, very important to upgrade the Linux Kernel to 5.13 level in Linux MInt. There are tip documents on how to do it in Youtube, etc.
Once at 5.13 kernel showing as "active". You can go into driver manager and install the Nvidia native drivers. I used the 490.x level (one back) and things are very stable.
I will eventually go to the 5xx.xx level.
Hope this helps someone
Jim
