I bought an HP Omen in February and it has mostly been fine but recently when I boot it up the Omen loco flashes before the screen goes black and remains stuck this way. I can hear the fans and the keyboard is lit up.

After I hold the power button down to shut it off, then turn it back on again, it boots up normally. Whats going on? I don't like to keep shutting it down this way, how can I fix the issue?

Thanks!!!

Hi @UserRichard11,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with your HP Omen 16 laptop, where it gets stuck on a black screen during boot, can be caused by various factors. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

  • Check for External Devices: Sometimes, external devices like USB drives or peripherals can interfere with the boot process. Ensure that no unnecessary peripherals are connected to your laptop when you start it up.
  • Hard Reset: Try performing a hard reset by disconnecting the laptop from the power source (if connected) and removing the battery (if possible). Then, press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds. Reconnect the power source and battery, and then try booting the laptop again.
  • BIOS/UEFI Settings: Access the BIOS or UEFI settings of your laptop during boot (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, or Delete) and check if there are any unusual settings or hardware configurations. You may want to reset the BIOS settings to default.
  • Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues. Download and install the latest graphics drivers from the HP website or the manufacturer's website for your specific GPU.
  • Boot in Safe Mode: Try booting your laptop in Safe Mode (usually by repeatedly pressing the F8 key during boot) to see if it starts up without issues. If it does, this may indicate a software or driver problem.
  • Windows Updates: Make sure that your operating system is up-to-date with the latest Windows updates. Sometimes, system updates can resolve compatibility issues.
  • Run Windows Diagnostics: Windows has built-in diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware and software problems. You can access these tools through the Windows Settings or Control Panel.
  • Check for Malware: Run a full system scan using a reputable antivirus or antimalware program to check for any malware that might be causing the issue.
  • System Restore: If you recently installed new software or drivers and the problem started after that, you can try using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state when it was working correctly.
  • Hardware Issues: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem, such as a faulty hard drive or RAM module.

Avoid forcing the laptop to shut down by holding the power button, as this can potentially cause data loss or further hardware problems.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
