After updating my BIOS in December 2025, my laptop now won't turn on.

I've tried everything - cleared out any residual power (even went so far as to remove the battery and run it off mains). I've reseated components, and have tried the WIN KEY + B (and also WIN KEY + V) method to try and reset the bios. I've downloaded a new version of the bios to a USB stick but no joy. Pressing the power button just results in it lighting up for a second, then turning off. No sign of the fans kicking in, the screen remains blank. I think something has gone on the motherboard but although I have an IT background I have no electrical experience.

After speaking with Omen on Facebook, I  have tried the CMOS reset several more times, holding down the WIN + V keys for 2 minutes after releasing the power button after 2 seconds. Nothing - laptop appears dead. I can confirm that the USB stick is set up exactly as per their video. I have followed the method again just to be sure but the computer remains lifeless.

I don't have a warranty but it's pretty shocking that a BIOS update can render a reasonably new expensive laptop useless.

Hi @Simunt,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your HP Omen 17 won't boot after a BIOS update, below are some steps to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power Down: Completely shut down your laptop.
  • Unplug the AC Adapter: Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Remove the Battery: If your model has a removable battery, take it out.
  • Clear Residual Power: Hold the power button down for approximately 15 seconds to drain any leftover power.
  • Reconnect Power: Reinstall the battery (if removable) and plug the adapter back in.
  • Attempt to Restart: Try turning on the laptop.

LED Blink Codes

  • Observe any blinking LEDs (like Caps Lock) which can indicate error codes.

Prepare a BIOS Recovery USB Drive:

  • On a different computer, download the latest BIOS version for your HP Omen 17 from the official HP Support page.
  • Follow instructions to create a BIOS recovery USB drive.

Take care and have an amazing day!
