HP Pavilion 15z-CW100 CTO

Laptop: hp pavilion - 15z-cw100 CTO

I recently ran into a 3f0 error on my laptop. Want to run the error entry conditions and attempted fixes by you all to see if there's anything else I can do.

Error State Entry

Was having issues with BSOD consistently after about 5 minutes of running. Error message given was "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED".

Started trying to debug and ended up in this 3f0 stuck state. Here's how I got there:

  1. ESC on startup to get startup menu
  2. Pressed F2 for system diagnostics. Ran through debug route for issue I was seeing and ran checks on many of the components. This was done using the nice HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  3. Closed diagnostics
  4. Hit F11 for system recovery
  5. Entered 3f0 state

Now every time I boot my computer it has the 3f0 state.

Debug steps

  1. Restarting 3x
  2. Boot in legacy mode
  3. Restore BIOS default settings
  4. System diagnostics - no longer getting HP HW Diagnostics view, only basic BIOS one with a few options
    1. Ran storage and hard drive check, both say no device found
  5. Replaced SSD with brand new functional one.
  6. Repeated system diagnostics check - same results (no device found)
  7. Linux and windows recovery drive
    1. Both booted and started the recovery process but could find no drive other than the USB recovery drive.
  8. BIOS recovery drive
    1. Correct format (FAT32) and verified the correct files are on it but the computer does not recognize the drive on any USB port

I have tried all steps in this doc: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_3053911-2842957-16

Places I have looked suggest that at this point it might be a motherboard issue. What do you all think? Any additional debug steps would be helpful.

Hi @MagicalMosfet,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. You've done an excellent job isolating the issue with your HP Pavilion 15z-CW100 CTO, and based on everything you've tried, including replacing the SSD and confirming that no storage device is detected even in diagnostics, your suspicion of a motherboard-level issue is very likely correct.

Next-Level Debugging (if you want to try more)

If you’re still up for a few more checks before concluding, it’s a motherboard issue:

  1. Try SATA SSD (if supported)
  • If your laptop has a 2.5" SATA slot, try installing a SATA SSD or HDD.
  • If that works, the issue is isolated to the M.2 NVMe interface.

2. Check BIOS Version and Update (if possible)

3. Inspect M.2 Slot (if accessible)

  • If you’re comfortable and have tools, inspect the M.2 slot for:
    • Bent pins
    • Burn marks
    • Loose solder joints

If It’s the Motherboard

If none of the above work, then yes, it’s likely a motherboard failure, specifically the storage controller or M.2 interface. In that case, you have to reach the stores or the support team.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
