Laptop was working fine but on a restart following windows update, it goes into recovery mode. Tried all available options but got nowhere.

Bios does not show the m2 ssd drive. Running diagnostics from bios, all tests come back passed with no issues. I am at a loss what to try next.

Tried to boot from recovery cd to restore an image, it fails with the following error: the volume does not contain a recognized file system 0x800703ed

Any help would be appreciated

Hi @sergenet

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Step 1: Check BIOS Settings and Reset Defaults

Since the M.2 SSD isn’t detected in BIOS, the first thing to check is the BIOS settings and whether the SSD is properly recognized at this low level.

A. Reset BIOS to Defaults

It's possible that after the Windows update, the BIOS settings were changed, and the SSD is no longer being detected.

Enter BIOS:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it back on, and immediately press Esc or F10 repeatedly to access the Startup Menu.
  • Select F10 to enter the BIOS Setup.

Restore BIOS Defaults:

  • Once inside the BIOS, look for an option like Restore Defaults or Load Optimized Defaults (the exact wording may vary).
  • After selecting this option, save the changes and exit the BIOS by pressing F10 (confirm the changes when prompted).

Check SSD Detection:

  • After resetting the BIOS to defaults, check if the SSD is now listed under Storage or Boot Devices.
  • If it’s still not showing up, try reseating the M.2 SSD (if you're comfortable with that), or consider testing the SSD in another computer or external enclosure to verify if the SSD itself has failed.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I already tried your suggestions before posting. HP diagnostics, both short and extended show the ssd to be fine. I even mounted it on a m.2 to usb adapter and checked it out. All my content including the os are on the disk. Bios does not see it, diskpart does not see it nor trying to restore it from a system image.  I cannot fix it from cmd prompt because I need to rum cmd as administrator but there is no option in recovery to do that.

Rebuild the Boot Configuration

If your SSD is recognized after accessing Command Prompt via installation media, you can try rebuilding the Master Boot Record (MBR) or Boot Configuration Data (BCD).

Rebuild the Boot Configuration:

In Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one:

Fix the Master Boot Record (MBR):

 bootrec /fixmbr

Fix the Boot Sector:

bootrec /fixboot

Rebuild the BCD (Boot Configuration Data):

bootrec /rebuildbcd

After running these commands, restart your laptop and check if the SSD is now detected in BIOS and booting correctly.2

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for your support Raj. I get the error The volume does not contain a recognized file system. I am using cmd prompt in recovery. Diskpart lists the drive but I can’t do much with it
