@Tone24, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're facing with your HP Pavilion 14m-dw0023dx — screen blank, power and caps lock LEDs blinking — indicates a hardware-level failure, and the blink pattern is a diagnostic code.

Here's how to interpret and proceed

Step 1: Count the Caps Lock blinks

  • HP uses blink codes to indicate specific hardware failures. These blinks repeat every few seconds.
  • Count the number of blinks between pauses.
  • Example: If it blinks 3 times, pauses, and repeats — it's a "3-blink" code, which corresponds to memory failure.
  • Let me know the exact number if you're not sure.

Step 2: Try a Basic Hardware Reset (You might've done some of this)

  • Disconnect power adapter and remove external devices (USBs, SD cards, etc.)
  • If battery is removable, take it out. If not, skip to the next step.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Plug the charger back in (leave battery out if it was removable).
  • Press the power button.

Still blank? Continue.

Step 3: Reseat or Replace RAM

You've tried reseating the RAM — great. Now try:

  • Use only one RAM stick at a time, in different slots.
  • Try different known-good RAM if you have access.
  • If RAM is soldered and not replaceable, then it could be system board failure instead.

Step 4: External Display Test

  • Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C (if supported).
  • Power on the laptop and see if display shows up on the external monitor.
  • If it does, your screen or display cable may be the issue.

Step 5: BIOS Recovery Attempt

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the Power button for ~3 seconds.
  • Release all keys.
  • Wait a few moments. If the BIOS recovery starts, your screen will turn on.

If none of these work:

You’re likely facing a motherboard or CPU failure, especially if the blink code points to "processor not functional" or "embedded controller error" (like a 5-blink or 3-blink code), then, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support

I keep getting one blink every 10-15 seconds followed by 5 consecutive blinks on the caps lock button

@Tone24, Thank you for your response.

This 1 long blink followed by 5 short blinks on the Caps Lock LED is an HP BIOS blink code, and it translates to:

Blink Code: 1 long + 5 short = BIOS Error (1.5 code)

This generally indicates a BIOS corruption failure, which prevents the system from starting.

Your BIOS firmware is likely corrupted — this can happen due to a failed BIOS update, sudden power loss, or hardware fault. Since the laptop doesn’t post (no HP logo), it’s stuck before boot.

Steps to Fix It:

BIOS Recovery Using HP Hotkey (Windows + B or V)

  • Turn off the laptop completely (hold power button until lights go off).
  • Plug in the charger (important).
  • Press and hold Windows + B or Windows + V.
  • While holding, press and hold the power button for 3–5 seconds.
  • Release all buttons and wait up to 40 seconds.
  • If the recovery works, you’ll hear beeps and the BIOS recovery screen should appear.

Create a BIOS Recovery USB (on another working PC)

If the hotkey method fails:

  • On another Windows PC, go to HP’s BIOS download page for your model:
HP Pavilion 14m-dw0023dx BIOS support page
  • Download the latest BIOS for your machine.
  • Run the BIOS file and choose "Create Recovery USB Flash Drive" when prompted.
  • Plug that USB into the dead laptop, and try the Windows + B / Power key combo again with it inserted.

If That Still Fails:

At this point, the BIOS chip may be permanently corrupted, or there may be motherboard-level damage. Then, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

I hope this helps!
