I need some help as I've run into a brick wall here. I own an HP Pavilion Dv5 running Ubuntu Linux software. A week ago it was running fine, but now it seems to have quit. Okay, so the main issue. When I insert the battery, the laptop fan starts running and two small lights come on, on the left side. One red and one white. But the power button light above the keyboard is off, the screen is black and pressing the power button does nothing. What can I do?

I wish we could help you from here, but we can't. The problem is that we HERE, have no way of diagnosing or repairing hardware problems. And, with the PC not even starting, even HP Tech Support, who have the authority and tools to REMOTE into a PC across the Internet, can not access your PC.
Software failures invariably present with error messages of some kind on the screen, such as No Operating System or No Boot Device. In these cases, reinstalling the OS from media such as DVD or USB fixes the first; rebuilding the boot records using various utilities fixes the second. But any time a laptop simply refuses to turn on, that tend to indicate a serious hardware failure.
If your PC is still under the original one-year HP warranty, or if you have purchased an extended warranty from HP and this is still valid, then you should contact HP Customer Support to see about having it repaired or replaced under warranty.
If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1
If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html
NOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!
If you have trouble finding a phone number, then try: 1 (650) 857-1501.
Tech Support's number is 1 (800) 474-6836.
If your PC is no longer under warranty, you will have to contact an HP Repair or Service Center to see if they can examine the PC to determine the cause(s) of the problems, if it can be repaired, and an estimate of the repair costs.

It's a blue thumbs up symbol on mobile. You got your like. Thanks for the help. Do you know of any other sites that offer self-repair or DIY tips on how to solve this issue myself? There's no warranty, it's over 6 years old. If it's junk, I don't see any harm in taking it apart to see how it's ticking.

Sorry, but apart from taking it into a repair facility, your are limited to running the diagnostics that came preinstalled with the PC.
To get to those, press the Esc key repeatedly while rebooting. Once the HP Startup Menu appears, select the option to run diagnostics.
IF those don't show anything, or if they fail to run, that implies a serious motherboard issue -- and replacing that is likely to cost more than replacing the laptop.
