Hi everyone,

I have an old laptop from 2019 that is out of warranty.
Since last week it will no longer boot. I get a blink code 5 long 3 short when I attempt it. According to the HP website this indicates that "the embedded controller cannot reach the BIOS within the established time limit".

So far I have attempted the following solutions:

  1. Press the power button and hold win + B for a bios recovery
  2. Hold win + V as an alternate key combination
  3. Power cycle by disconnecting the battery and holding the power button for 30 sec (model has no CMOS)
  4. Boot without battery using the original charger

So far I have gotten it to boot only twice by power cycling -> plug in the battery -> power button. However I do not know why this worked and restarting just presented the blink code again.

I suspect a motherboard issue but this is not something I can repair myself. I will likely have to look for a new laptop.

Does anyone know approximately how expensive a board replacement or board repair would be?

Also does anyone know how I can create a support ticket/call hp without having to pay a 25 euro fee? As a student I am not willing to pay this simply to get an estimate for the repair cost.

Hi @Garp_senchau,

I sent you a PM last Saturday (25-11-22).

Did you get a chance to look at it yet?

Kind regards,
