I have a 4 year old HP Pavilion laptop (not sure of the model no.), which worked just fined until recently. Then it started to turn off a couple of times (literally like someone held down the power button for several seconds) in the middle of using it.

After this happened a few times, it then decided not to start at all. It boots, fan starts etc. when the lid is opened, but then turns off with a click (again like someone held down the power button for several seconds).

I followed the help instructions to remove battery and power cable, hold the power button for 30+ seconds, then to click the start button, and this did work. But I had to do it each time I started the laptop.

Now it doesn't even start using this technique, but I discovered that if I shut the lid after opening it, before the click (turn off) occurs, it continues to boot. When I open the lid after 5 minutes, the login screen is there, but then it turns off with a click (again like someone held down the power button for several seconds).

Any ideas?

@mwalter4

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the laptop isn't turning on when the lid is opened, however, powers off as soon as you log into windows,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

(Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

Do the lights on the laptop turn off when the pc shutdown or do they continue to blink?

Did you make any hardware changes within the BIOS or otherwise before the issue occurred?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

Perform a hard reset (click here for details) - I know you've done similar steps, however, I recommend doing it exactly as advised on the link for better results.

If the computer still turns off every few seconds after login,

Try with an alternate adapter and/or remove the battery and try turning on the computer without the battery,

Only connect the adapter and start.

Do get back to me as I have a few more tricks up my sleeve,

That said, If I have helped you resolve the issue,

feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon

followed by clicking on 'Accepted as Solution'

And Have a great day Ahead!

Finally got round to trying this again. This time, the power reset worked (it didn't work last time before my post) and the laptop booted correctly.

However I noticed the battery is at 0%, suggesting it had lost its charge or didn't charge. It is now charging however.

If the laptop continues to work without suddenly turning off as it did before (in the way it does if you force a shutdown by holding the power button) I wiil perform a normal shutdown, close the lid and then try to start the laptop again. The reason I mention closing the lid, is because that was my problem previously, it would try to boot upon opening the lid, and then cut out bad if the power button had been held for 10 seconds plus.

Hi @mwalter4

Welcome to HP Forums. Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I understand that the Notebook use to shut down randomly.

I could help.

We can try updating the Bios on the Notebook.

I will need the Product Number of your Notebook.

You can refer to this Link: hp.care/2bygf7l for help in locating the Product Number.

Also let me know if the issue reoccurs and if the Notebook keeps shutting down

Thank you. 🙂

Hi @KrazyToad,

My device info:

Product number is: F5B54EA#ABU

Serial number: [edited]

Model: 15-n222sa

My current situation is the laptop will (sometimes) turn on after a power reset, other times it will only turn on if I open the lid (which causes it to boot) and then immediately close the lid and wait for the boot process to complete. I can then (again sometimes) open the lid and login to use the computer successfully, but other times it just cuts out when I open the lid. I then have to try the power reset process again, but this usually only works if I leave it for  a few days before trying again!!

Regards,

Mark.

Hi @mwalter4

Please download the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver from this Link and also the Bios from Here

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your assistance. I have not updated the BIOS yet or downloaded the MEI tool you suggested, I wasn't surre of the instructions for updating the BIOS but I now understand it is easier than I thought.

However my current situation is the laptop works, as long as I keep it powered on! I close the lid and it goes to sleep/standby when not in use. When I open the lid I get the login screen; it even restarts after updates.

However, if I shutdown, it reverts to the "trying to boot when I open the lid and then switching off  with a click after a few seconds" behavior.

I then have to leave it for a couple of days, perform a power reset, and then it boots normally. It will not boot normally if I do a power reset and then press the power button the same day.

I will eventually try the BIOS update, but this has all got me thinking it's tiem to get a new laptop now! 🙂

I haave a hp 15 and it was doing exact same thing. i unplugged the power button and it worked the laptop booted but as soon as i touched the connector into the slot to reconnect the power button the laptop went to sleep. i repalced the power button assembly and the laptop works fine.  Hope this helps
