HP Pavilion dv4-1105em Entertainment Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have a hp pavilion dv4-1105em laptop; I replaced the primary hdd with an ssd and then I replaced the dvd drive with the old hdd using a hdd caddy, i installed windows10 on the ssd and the windows detects the hdd and shows all files, folders, partitions, etc on it without any problem; But the laptop won't boot from the hdd eventhough there is a windows installed on it, i installed another windows on it and it still doesn't boot, there is no boot option for the second hdd in the bios at all, the boot options that are shown in bios are always "notebook hard drive" + anythingelse i connect to the laptop( usb, external hdd, etc) but there is never an option for the second hdd; In the diagnosis tab of the bios settings it shows "secondary hard disk self test" though. The bios version is F.66  Rev.3.5.

What is the problem? What should i do? Please help me

Hi @Shahinaf,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like the BIOS on your HP Pavilion laptop is not detecting the secondary HDD as a bootable option. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Check Boot Order:

  • Go into the BIOS/UEFI settings of your laptop.
  • Look for the "Boot Order" or "Boot Priority" section.
  • Ensure that the primary SSD (where Windows is installed) is set as the first boot option.
  • Check if the secondary HDD is listed in the boot order. If not, try to locate an option to add it.

Legacy/UEFI Mode:

  • Confirm if both the SSD and HDD are installed in the same mode (Legacy or UEFI).
  • Some systems might have issues booting if one drive is in UEFI mode and the other in Legacy mode. Make sure both are set to the same mode.

Check SATA Mode:

  • In the BIOS, find the SATA configuration settings.
  • Ensure that the SATA mode is set to the same mode for both the SSD and the HDD. Common modes are AHCI or RAID.

Update BIOS:

  • Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop.
  • If there is an update, install it, as it may include fixes for compatibility issues.

Boot Manager Repair:

  • Boot from the Windows installation USB/DVD.
  • Choose the Repair your computer option.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
  • Use commands like bootrec /rebuildbcd, bootrec /fixmbr, and bootrec /fixboot to repair the boot manager.

Reinstall Boot Loader:

  • Boot from the Windows installation media.
  • Choose the Repair your computer option.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
  • Use the bcdboot command to rebuild the boot configuration data.

Check Caddy Connection:

  • Ensure that the HDD caddy is connected properly.
  • Try using a different caddy or reconnecting the existing one.

Verify HDD Health:

  • Use third-party tools to check the health and status of the secondary HDD.
  • Ensure there are no issues with the partition table or file system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
