--- Hi, so I posted this before but I can't find it anywhere in the forums. If this is a double post please delete it. ----

I've had this laptop for about 9 years. During this time I have replaced the keyboard, battery and HDD once. The current battery is at least 7 years old and has lost the ability to hold charge for more than 5 minutes. What it is good for is powering the laptop ON. The laptop for the last 2 years has refused to Power ON with the battery out and the wall charger plugged IN. I have tried new batteries as well, they do work but if I shut down the laptop at night and try to turn it on in the morning it doesn't boot. However if I put the old battery in and turn it ON it works (without the wall charger plugged in).

Since the old battery can't hold charge I power the laptop and plug it in and as soon as it boots. The past few days however the laptop refuses to turn ON unless the battery is removed for a long period of time (like a day at least) e.g. It wouldn't turn ON yesterday so I took the battery out and left it out until this morning and tried again and it turned ON!

Can someone explain to me why is this happening? Can I perform any tests now that the laptop is ON? (I won't be turning it off anytime soon)

Note: When the laptop doesn't turn ON I have tried the hard reset method of holding the power button for 20-40 seconds but it doesn't help. Only leaving the battery out for a long time allows the laptop to boot.

Thanks for the help!

Hi
First:- Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.

Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.
Rinse and Repeat; Re-Connect the AC adapter.

NOW begin checking/testing/proving the Hardware is fit for purpose.
Power on your PC, press ESC (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).

HOW DO I USE DIAGNOSTICS?

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows is a Windows-based utility that allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. The tool runs within the Windows operating system in order to diagnose hardware failures. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows comes pre-installed on new HP computers, but if not on yours, download here:-

Thankyou for the reply. I have done the test and it shows PASSED in both the Hard disk and memory test. What do I do now?

Could this be a CMOS battery issue? Or maybe a capacitor issue since the laptop does eventually turn ON?

Hi

Not seeing the problem...........

One thing is that a corrupted BIOS can try and start, fail to a backup, and then after a small delay function correctly.

The CMOS could be the problem with the POST taking longer to read the installed / attached devices.

But it is all guesswork on my part.

Yeah I shut it down yesterday evening, and tried turning it ON after 2 minutes and it doesn't respond at all. No lights nothing but the battery charge led is white.

This morning again I'm trying but no use. Most likely if I keep the battery out all day today it will probably turn ON tomorrow morning. Very strange behavior.

As I ,expected today evening after the battery being out of the laptop a whole day, it turned ON. I uninstalled the Microsoft Battery ACPI service thing from Device Manager as suggested by another HP employee in my previous query, but sadly the laptop doesn't want to turn ON again. Rinse and repeat I guess.
