Hello mrward5. I understand you're having some problems with your notebook's screen.
It sounds like the backlight for your screen isn't working. Does the backlight ever work? For example, when you boot the notebook does it work and then it dims when the Windows screen loads?
I'd like you to try hard resetting the notebook first. Here are the steps.
- Shut down the computer.
- Remove the battery and AC power.
- Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds three times.
- Replace the battery and AC power.
- Verify whether the issue persists.
I'd also like to suggest updating the BIOS before looking into having to repair the notebook. Could you provide me with your product number? This document can show you where it is located.
I'll be keeping an eye out for your response. I hope you have a great day.

Thank you for your response, I have tried the hard reset and the screen is still faint with the image. I seems as though everything is working but the image. My product number is QE126UA#ABA .. Model : g7-1269nr.
There is nothing that actually says product "number". There is a product key if u need that as well. I got this info from underneath the battery.
I also think the laptop may not be reading when its opened and closed. It will still startup windows when its closed or make start up sounds and notify me of my updates. All info is very helpful. Thank you

You did post the information I was looking for, it was the QE126UA number. Please, do NOT post your Product Key. This is like the serial number for your Windows installation and is very sensitive information.
If you're able to faintly see the screen that means the likely cause of the issue is that the backlight isn't working properly. So, replacing that part would be the best bet.
Now, after a little research it appears that you (possibly) have an LED (as opposed to LCD). In an LED screen the backlight is part of the screen assembly. As far as I am aware this is not the case with an LCD. So, before I suggest the repair I'd like to verify which part you'd need. However, this means that I'll need some information from the machine that should NOT BE POSTED PUBLICALLY ON THE FORUM. Sorry for the caps but it is very important. So, I'm going to send you a private message.
Also, I notice that this notebook is supported for Windows 8. This means it likely isn't very old. Is there any chance it is in warranty (you can check here). If it is warranty you should contact HP Support and see what your options are. The number for US/Canadian customers is 1-800-474-6836. If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.
Have a lovely day.

I have EXACTLY the same problem. The only solution I found is when you have the problem, leave the computer on for about an hour on a surface that is a very poor heat sink such as a carpeted floor or a bed . Then turn the computer off and turn it back on again. It should boot up and behave OK. Also in the future avoid any shock on the computer because it will bring the problem back.

Hi everyone! I'm having exactly the same problem as glassman1960...so may I ask if anyone has solved it yet? Hard reset wasn't working for me or probably I wasn't doing it the right way and I think that graphic may need to be reheated with heater or hair dryer or anything that has heating air flow but I won't do that until I see if glassman1960 had found the solution if not I'll try that and post the process of it and if it worked...Thanks! Cheers.

Hi! I am also having the exact same problem. Faint graphic, it would come and go while working on the Laptop. I have replaced the LCD screen, replaced the graphic cable (thinking maybe it was getting pinched or wearing out) to no avail. I found this post and tried the hard reset, and now it is always black, not even an intermittent problem. Help?? It appears to be working fine other than the black screen, so I hate to junk it. I'd love some intput. Thanks so much!
