Probook 455 G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have recently got brand new Probook 455 G3 with AMD A-10 Radeon R6 and Windows-10 Home 64 bit OS.

I need to use Oracle's Virtual BOX ( VB )software to create a Linux VM with 64 bit Linux OS.

Normally, after VB is installed, it would show options for 64 bit as well as 32 bit Linux and other OS. VB does this by

accessing System Configuration info on Laptop.

However, after I install VB successfully , It does not show options for 64 bit OS's , it only shows options for various OS with 32 bit configuration.  Even for Windows as a guest OS, it shows 32 bit option only.

I looked at HP and VB forums and looks like many people had this problem. And it seems this requires BIOS update and setting AMD-V ( or virtualization option in BIOS) to "Enabled" Mode. Hence I upgraded by BIOS via HP Support Assistant and then I tried to look into BIOS options during Booting, I can not find any options for Virtualization such as AMD-V or similar.

I also tried re-installing VB with ADMIN user on the Laptop but still no resolution. VB forum tells to look at BIOS settings only and Disable Windows Hyper-V settings. For me, HYPER-V is already disabled since i have Windows 10 Home edition, and that edition does not suppoer Hyper-V.  I have other HP with Intel I5, and VB works just fine with 64 bit option on that.

WIll appreciate if anyone has any success in setting this up for this model of HP and provide some hints.

Thanks.

C.B.

In BIOS click on Advance.

Under System Options do you have svm cpu virtualization enabled???

You may want to look here for other support.

Hi,

In bios under system configuration > device configuration there should be the option to enable virtualization.

Let me know,

David

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and the hint worked perfect ! I had to Tick the check box under ADVANCED option for CPU Virtualization, then save the BIOS changes and Re-started the laptop and VB showed 32 and 64 bit options in its drop down. I did not have to re-install VB.

Thanks again for prompt response.

Now for those like me trying to use VB(Oracle VirtualBox ) for using Linux VM under Windows-10 Home And similar HP Laptop ( AMD A10-8700p R6 Radeon) :  I did following to resolve the issue of 64 bit option not being shown in VB:

-- First thing is that this issue is related to BIOS settings and so we need to get into BIOS Menu and so re-start the laptop and keep pressing F2 , it will show HP logo a couple of times and then we can see BIOS diagnostics menu. We need to EXIT from this top Menu ( EXIT --> YES/NO --> Select NO, which will take to next level of Menu).

-- In the Next BIOS Menu, Select ADVANCED option at Top ( use Arrow keys to navigate ). Under ADVANCED Option you can see "svm CPU Virtualization"  with its checkbox as un-checked.   Check this Option and then SAVE and Exit from BIOS Set Up. The Booting of Laptop continues.

-- Shutdown Laptop as soon as it started after BIOS Change as above, and then re-start it, now we should be able to see 64 bit options active in VB Drop-Down.

-- My HP Laptop came with two good set-up utilities from HP called Support Assistant and HP TOuchPoint. These were very helpful initially to upgrade BIOS and other software versions as well as researching the issue of Virtual Box.
