I am having the same problem as the user in this post: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Archive-Read-Only/spectre-not-charging/td-p/

My existing battery was performing poorly; my laptop would shut off without warning with about 33% charge.  After troubleshooting, including attempted calibration in both Windows and BIOS, I figured the battery needed replacing.  I purchased and installed the new battery and things worked fine for a day.  New battery would charge fully to 100% and appeared to hold a good charge.

However, after 24 hours or so, the battery would not charge.  The LED near the AC adapter port would not light up, neither orange nor white.  The laptop would still turn on, but could not be charged.  I then tried a hard reset, by removing the battery, holding down the power button for a minute, and then replacing the battery.  The battery would still not charge, and the power LED would still not turn on.

I've checked the AC adapter pin and the port itself, and the connection is good and tight; the pin is straight.  I've ordered a replacement AC adapter to see if that is the problem but I don't think it is.  I'll post with an update as to whether the new adapter works.

Any ideas?  I would try removing and replacing the CMOS battery to force a BIOS reset but I don't know where the CMOS battery is, and I don't want to remove parts just yet.

Hi @Zytos,

This looks like a possible hardware failure. However, it's a good idea to have it checked with an new AC Adapter.

If the new adapter works, then it would be an issue with the old AC Adapter.

If the new adapter fails, then it's a clear indication where the charging port on the Motherboard might be faulty.

I would personally suggest you contact our HP support team for further assistance.

Thanks for the reply Jeet.  I will get the new AC adapter tomorrow and will advise of the results.  I've also ordered a new replacement power jack.  If the new AC adapter doesn't work, I will try replacing the power jack.  And if that doesn't work, I will contact HP support to see what my options are.

The new AC adapter did not work.  In fact, the adpater ran very hot while attempting to charge.  My last resort is to replace the DC power jack/harness.

The laptop does now turn on with both the old and new battery, but neither battery can accept a charge--the LED near the charging port remains off.  Since the motherboard and computer itself seems fine, I am now thinking that the new battery, while the battery did power on the laptop, wasn't accepting a charge correctly, overheated, and damaged the DC power jack.

I'll report back if I learn anything else.
