Subject pretty much summarizes the issue.

I performed a battery replacement with a HP genuine battery, as this is a 2021 machine and the battery capacity had worn down a lot.

After performing the battery replacement, the machine boots initially fine on both battery and AC.  However, if booting OR waking from sleep or hibernate, on battery, usually right after Windows login, but sometimes before or some random number of seconds after login, the machine black screen hard crashes with no error.

It then becomes actually difficult to restart if on battery -- the power button has to be pressed a random (large) number of times over about 5-10 minutes, then it magically powers up at some point and gives the "not shut down properly" message and following boot lines in small text on a black screen.  Then it seemingly boots normally, but then does it all again.

The only way out of this loop is to boot on AC.  After booting on AC, the power plug can be removed and the laptop will stay powered indefinitely, even on battery.

I have put the old, depleted battery back in, and the problem goes away.

I have tried MULTIPLE new batteries, and they both do the same thing.

It seems to be a weird Windows-BIOS interaction, choking on a new battery, but only during the startup process.

This is pretty dang irritating as the laptop is half useless with such a weak battery, but is otherwise perfectly fine.

This HP line is rife with startup/sleep/wake issues (I own two x360s, one was stolen and replaced, so I've now owned 3 total -- every single one had sleep/wake issues) and unfortunately this will probably be the last time I buy one because these problems have wasted a ton of my time.

Forgot to mention, Windows 11 is the latest version and the HP Support utility says the BIOS is up to date.
