As of a week or so ago, I started having an issue where my laptop will randomly lock up.  Keyboard and mouse freeze and the only way to fix is a hard restart.

I have tried running the Quick and Extended tests during startup, but both have passed with no issues.

This issue will happen once per day, and it seems random. I might just be reading an email, watching a video, or typing a document.  Obviously, this is extremely frustrating, and I'm dreading the day when this happens while I'm on a video conference with a client.

My BIOS and other drivers are all up to date, all updates have also been made using HPSA.  This doesn't seem to help the issue as I just had another lock up today.

I don't think any power outages or surges caused the issue.  The laptop has only been plugged into surge protectors if it's not running on battery power.

I solved this problem by going into the device manager and disabling the two entries under batteries

"Microsoft AC Adapter"

and

"Microsoft ACPI-"

No more freezes, unfortunately, also no batter charge indicator.

Hope an update solves this soom.

Any suggestions as to how to get my battery indicator?

On further troubleshooting, disabling

Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Battery Method

Solves the random freeze problem. Unfortunately, it also disables the battery charge indicator.

For what its worth, this is what I did to fix mine (and also retain the battery indicator):

Go to Device Manager/Wireless adaptor: Update driver (let windows find it on the internet; don't browse locally)

Then go to Power Management options/Advanced options, the HP recommended plan would be the default one; scroll down to wirelss adaptor and select 'max performance' for the battery mode (the power plug in mode should already be set to max performance).

Then apply changes and reboot.

My brand new HP Spectre X360 i7 8th gen used to randomly freeze until I did this and now a lot more fluid (and no freezes so far!)

I wanted to add this to the existing thread of the same name, but replies seem to be shut off.

The accepted solution appears to need to inclue setting for Maximum Performance.

This is entirely unaccacceptable! I need the battery-friendly mode -- part of the reason I bought this machine.

Can we FIX the problem, rather than a band-aid work around?

Accepted Solution:

per:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/HP-Spectre-x360-randomly-locking-up-once-per-...

. Open Device Manager. (Win Key+R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)
2. Expand the Network adapters.
3. Right click on the Ethernet/Wireless Adapter and click Properties.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Remove the check mark beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
6. Click OK.

Then check if the issue gets fixed.

Also, make sure that you delete all existing power plans and set the power plan on High performance.

Alternate Solution that works for me:

in device manager disable

Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Battery Method

Solves the random freeze problem. Unfortunately, it also disables the battery charge indicator.
