Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi!

I recently reset my HP Stream Notebook to get rid of a clog in the Windows directory. However, after I reset the computer, it did not make it past the boot screen. As I type this, it is still doing this. I'll explain below in better detail.

I turn my computer on. The HP Logo flashes, and leads me to a blank screen, and goes back to the HP Logo and goes back to the blank screen again. Repeat about 100 times and you have the idea of what is going on with my computer.

If you could help me, that would be great. I don't want to replace my laptop after only 1 year of owning it.

Hello @Ddaves

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

It looks like the recovery (system reset) never completed successfully. You are now left without a fully installed operating system.

1. Perform some basic hardware checks to rule out hardware problem

- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)

- Power the computer back on.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

- Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM check (memory check).

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

2. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F11 for System Recovery options.

The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.

Try to reset the computer again. Follow the on-screen instructions for system recovery / Reset this PC.

If the process completes successfully, you are done.

If not, please let me know and I will post instructions how to clean install Windows 10.

Hi @IT_Winsec ,

I did the following, and the quick test went without problems, but I'm not sure where the recovery option is after I press F11. I just get the Win. 10 "Choose an Option". Does this mean the Recovery section was not fully re-installed?

Check the URLs above.

In "Choose an option" screen, select Troubleshoot

Then, select either "Recovery Manager" if available

or "Reset your PC"

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Let me know how it goes

Hi @IT_WinSec ,

I've tried the reset 4 times now, and each time it has failed. Is there any way to stop it from failing? Thanks!

Also, I cannot find the Recovery Manager option in the Troubleshoot tab. Does this mean I cannot recover Windows 10?

No, of course not. Don't you worry. There are other methods. You cannot recover Windows 10 using the Windows/HP Recovery method but you can clean reinstall Windows. Also, there may be another method - purchasing HP Recovery media for your PC model.

Windows reinstallation / clean installation (the free method) :

- You can directly download Windows 10 ISO from MS site or

download >> Media creation tool from Microsoft site, create installation DVD or installation USB  and  proceed with clean installation/reinstallation.

Download:

Make sure you select the proper version (32 or 64 bit / Home or Pro)

Media Creation tool will always provide you with the latest Windows version/build - now 1709 Fall Creators Update.

- When download completes, you will need to write  the ISO image and boot from a bootable media. You will need a blank USB pendrive (min 4 GB capacity). Use the Media Creation tool.

When ready with the USB drive :

Please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive prepared previously

Power on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, start hitting the Esc button repeatedly (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the USB thumb drive as a boot option.

- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10. Perform clean installation/custom installation (not repair).

Delete all existing partitions and install Windows on Disc 0 Unallocated space

- After successful Windows installation, install drivers taken from HP web site or via Windows Update/Device Manager >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

- Make sure Windows is Activated by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Activation

- You may wish to stop some of the Windows Telemetry by using free tools such as Spybot AntiBeacon or DWS Lite

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes
