HP Stream

I seem to be having a problem booting my HP Stream, I have tried everything instructed in the guide and I did a BIOS recovery but my laptop won't stop. The HP Logo comes up and then the screen goes blank, the screen is still producing light at that point, but then the screen goes completely black and stops producing light, the HP logo then comes back up and the cycle just repeats, I have tried leaving it charging and as I said have followed the guide, but it doesn't really address specific issues, so does anyone have any idea what the heck is going on with my laptop? I can provide photos.

Hello @AidenNeely

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

Which guide did you follow - could you post a link to it (if online manual) ?

Please, let me know what exactly you did regarding BIOS. I recommend you don't mess with BIOS - this is most likely not related.

What you experience is Windows not being able to load actually. It may be caused due to simple Windows hung, hardware problem (e.g. your storage device) or it may be caused by faulty Windows Update, some other faulty update/driver, corrupted bootloader / Boot Configuration Data in Windows etc....

1. Try hard restart/hard reset.

Press the power on-button on your PC and hold it for about 5-10 seconds until your computer powers off completely.

Remove and unplug any external periferals and accessories.

Press once the power-on button to turn on the PC and wait if it will start now. Wait...

If it still fails to load properly, go ahead with the next steps

2. Perform some basic hardware checks to rule out hardware problem

- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)

- Power the computer back on.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

- Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM check (memory check).

Let me know the test results.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Provide your feedback/reply.

Thanks for replying, the guide I used is this one http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=NoPowerorBootIssues.net&section=ccweb&as=true&SFS=sdoc&os=wi...  It recommended I try recovering my BIOS, I also have tried several Hard Resets but every time I start one it gets stuck at %62... I am running the Hardware test now, I think I may have an issue there. Will post if something comes up.

I ran some tests and the results said I had no problems with my Hardware, like I said, the hard reset gets stuck at %62.

Hi,

It's good the hardware diagnostics has been completed without issues. This confirms it is software issue.  Windows cannot boot and your recovery partition is not OK, too. Therefore, you need to reinstall Windows and do it from scratch - by using bootable USB pen drive with WIndows installation OR recovery media by HP.

From what I see, I suppose you don't have your own installation media or recovery media.

In order to provide you with specific instructions, please tell me :

- your full HP product model and product number (p/n) >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108

- your Windows version you use - Windows 8 or 10 ?

- if your PC had Windows 8, did you upgrade to Windows 10 and which version you prefer ?

Thank you for the diagnosis, my Laptops name off of Amazon is, "

HP Stream 11-r010nr Notebook"

I believe the product number is in the name but I will repeat it, "11-r010nr"

I had Windows 10 if I remember properly and I do prefer it as well.

I don't really know how to do the reinstall Window thing, perhaps you could tell me how or link a guide?

Thanks!

Hi,

You can directly download Windows 10 ISO image from Microsft website or download their >> Media creation tool from Microsoft site, create installation USB device and  proceed with clean installation/reinstallation.

The clean installation usually involves erasing of everything. Do you have important files which you really have to save and which are not stored anywhere else ? Let me know.

Download:

When download completes, you will need to write the ISO image and boot from a bootable media.

Follow the Media Creation tool instructions and ensure empty/blank USB drive of at least 4 GB capacity.

When ready with the USB drive:

You have to boot from it

Eventually, shutdown the computer using the power button - pressed and hold for 5-10 seconds.

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive prepared previously

Power  on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately start hitting the Esc button repeatedly (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the USB thumb drive as a boot option.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10. Custom installation. Delete all existing partitions and install Windows on Disk 0 Unallocated space

After successful installation, connect to the Internet.

Download and install drivers taken from HP web site when Win installation completes or via Windows Update/Device Manager >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Activation and let me know if Windows activated successfully.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi,

I am experiencing the exact issue.

In order to ‘[...] create installation USB devise and proceed with clean installation [...]’ - would I need to do this from another PC or can this be carried out in recovery mode?

Thanks in advance,

Hello @Robo80s

You will need a different computer to do so - a working computer.

If you do not have another PC available, you might be able to order recovery media from HP - USB media. Here is how to do it >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143/

If you decide to fo this route and once you receive the HP original USB recovery device, you should plug it in and boot from it. Here are the details >> http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=HPSystemRecovery.net&section=ccweb&sfs=tdoc&lc=en&language=e...

Hope this helps ! Let me know how it goes.
