HP diagnostics /repair won't let me get to Win 11 recovery environment on safe boot
after the HP scan/repair, I'm in the old style boot environment; not the recovery environment. I want to keep HP diagnostics /repair off until I want to use it. Is this possible?

Hi @rgfoote

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like HP’s built-in diagnostics are overriding the Windows recovery environment, which can be frustrating when you want full control over system recovery.

Here’s how you might bypass HP’s intervention and force Windows to launch its own recovery options.

1. Try Force-Accessing Windows Recovery

Since HP diagnostics are intercepting the boot process, force Windows into recovery mode:

  • Shut down completely.
  • Turn on the laptop and immediately start pressing F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly.
  • If that doesn’t work, try forcing Windows into recovery mode by holding the power button to force shutdown three times in a row. This can sometimes trigger Windows recovery instead of HP diagnostics.

2. Disable HP Diagnostics on Boot (BIOS Settings)

If HP diagnostics keep launching, check BIOS settings:

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Press F10 immediately after powering on to enter BIOS.
  • Look for an option related to "HP Diagnostics" or "HP Repair" and disable it.
  • If there’s no direct setting, check for "Boot Order" and remove HP’s repair tools from the sequence.

3. Directly Boot Into Windows Recovery via Install Media

If HP diagnostics block access, consider booting with a Windows installation USB:

  • Download Windows 11 media creation tool from Microsoft.
  • Create a bootable USB drive.
  • Plug it in → Power on → Press F9 → Select your USB drive to boot.
  • Choose "Repair Your Computer" → Enter Windows Recovery Mode.

4. Manually Enter Safe Mode Without Recovery Screen

If you’re just trying to get into Safe Mode:

  • Power on → Hold Shift and press Restart while clicking the Windows power button.
  • If already inside Windows, open Command Prompt (cmd.exe as admin) and type:shutdown /r /o
  • This forces Windows to boot into Advanced Recovery, bypassing HP tools.

Let me know which method gets you past HP’s interference—I know you like having full control over your system, so this should help you regain it.
