HP Pavilion - 14-ce0988nl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there, my laptop started re-starting by itself a few times last night while using it. This morning it did the same once, then again another time but this time it would just switch the power on, immediately get to a black screen and then caps lock starts blinking.

Blinking starts with 5 longer ones, then 3 fast ones, then again 5 longer ones and then 4 fast ones. From then on, it keeps being 5 long+4 fast.

Any urgent help please? I need my laptop for work and don"t have a replacement.

Thanks

Please try a hard reset and see if it works.

   1. Power off your laptop
   2. Remove the a/c adapter, battery and everything that is attached to your laptop.
   3. Hold the 'POWER' button down on your laptop for about 10 seconds.
   4. Plug in the a/c power supply (without battery) and power on.

Regards.

Hello? Can i get any suppport with this? A technician said it's the motherboard and to just buy a new laptop. How is it possible if mine is only 3 years old??

Update: tried hard reset. Nothing. Tried installing new BIOS from flash drive. Nothing. When open, the BIOS would start if SSD disconnected. Once you reconnect SSD, it goes back to black screen and blinking caps lock. Went to the repair shop at least retrieve all my data from the SSD, and to my (and the technician's) surprise, data on the SSD cannot be accessed not recovered.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi @MarcoC17,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I'd like to help!

I understand you are facing a Blinking lights issue on your HP HP Pavilion - 14-Ce0988nl with a black screen. This condition indicates that the embedded controller reaches its time limit waiting for the BIOS to return from system board initialization.

So I request you to follow the below instructions:

If your computer BIOS still does not reset, you can try to recover the BIOS using a key press combination. You may refer to this VIDEO as well.

Recover the BIOS using a key press combination

Turn off the computer and remove all external devices connected Via USB/HDMI ports, be sure that the AC adapter is connected to power.

Press and hold the Windows + B keys, and then simultaneously press the power button.

Keyboard highlighting the key presses for BIOS recovery

After 2 to 3 seconds, continue to press and hold the Windows + B keys, but release the power button. You might hear a series of beeps.

If the HP BIOS Update screen is not displayed, repeat the previous steps but press the Windows + V keys. If the screen is still not displayed, your computer might not support the feature or there is a hard drive issue.

If the power light turns off, the power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure that you press and hold the power button for only 2 to 3 seconds.

If a message displays that the computer improperly shut down or a boot problem is detected, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the error.

If Windows starts, update to the latest BIOS version. Go to HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) (Windows) or HP Business Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) for more information.

The HP BIOS Update screen is displayed and the recovery begins automatically.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
