When I restart my laptop or turn it on, I have a screen showing my background, time, signal strength and battery life but the box to input the password is missing. I cannot therefore get any access into my laptop. No matter what buttons I press the box does not appear. Please help!

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers & meet like minded tech enthusiasts!
As I understand there's a no password prompt screen to access your device,
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
- Is that a local account or a Microsoft account you've got on that device?
- When was the last time it worked without these issues? Did you try a system restore?
While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:
At the logon screen without the option to enter password, you should have a small power button symbol at the bottom right corner, hold SHIFT key & click on restart while holding it to restart into the Advanced boot options, where it should give you the option to choose the "Troubleshoot".
- Click on the Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- When it is restarts, it should give the option to enter the safe mode, select it,
- After booting the machine with safe mode, it would prompt for the password to login, please login...
- Then press Windows key + R, and type - MSCONFIG on the run command,
- un-check the "safe boot" & select disable all Microsoft services under the services tab, then click on disable all.
- After another restart, it should get back to the normal startup & prompted to enter password to login.
If the issue persists, the best way to resolve the issue is by using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:
CLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE TROUBLESHOOTER
(simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).
Keep me posted,
For I (Or a trusted colleague) shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,
And your device is up and running again,
that said, If the information I've provided was helpful,
give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Meanwhile, use an alternate keyboard, tap on F2 during a restart and run a system test to ensure the device doesn't have any hardware issues.
