My father's HP laptop no longer boots up. It is relatively new and was barely used. I took it once at school for a presentation and since then, it was never used. Today, when he tried to open it, it didn't boot up at all. I will mention there was no dropping or hindering with the internal components. I checked the exterior for external damage, and none is to be seen. I googled it up. The results recommended removing the battery, plugging it in without it. No result. Next, I removed the battery, waited a while, then plugged it in again. No result.

I tried changing the outlet, thinking it might be faulty. Still, no result. Now, my only two suspicions are:

  1. The power source at the school. I don't trust it that much, but it is not in my knowledge that it destroys laptops. Could it be the cause? Others use the school power supply and have no issues at all.

  2. The OS. I suspect there might be something wrong with it causing it to not boot up. But the fans aren't working either, so I suppose it might not be it? The battery seems fine, no signs of damage. It is dusty, i have to say, but the contacts are not corroded or apparently damaged in any way. My third suspicion would be the power cable, I tried adjusting the connections, making sure they fit snuggly (without forcing, of course). Does someone have any idea what might go wrong? Again, laptop was barely used throughout its lifetime, and it is new. Think it was bought 1 or 2 years ago

Hi @mafnadeda,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's unfortunate that your HP laptop is not booting up. Let's try to troubleshoot the issue step by step.

Check Power Adapter and Cable:

  • Ensure that the power adapter and cable are working correctly. If possible, try a different power cable and adapter.
  • Make sure the power outlet you are using is functioning. Plug in another device to verify that the outlet is supplying power.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the laptop from the power source.
  • If the battery is removable, remove it.
  • Hold down the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power source and try turning on the laptop.

Inspect Battery:

  • If the battery is removable, make sure it is properly seated.
  • Check for any signs of damage on the battery, such as bulging or leaking.

Try an External Monitor:

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor to see if it displays anything. This can help determine if the issue is with the laptop's screen.

Listen for Any Beep Codes:

  • Some laptops produce beep codes that indicate hardware issues. If you hear any beeping sounds when trying to start the laptop, note the pattern and check the laptop's manual for an explanation.

Check for Overheating:

  • Laptops may fail to start if they are overheating. Ensure that the vents are not blocked and the cooling system is working properly.

Perform a BIOS/UEFI Reset:

  • If possible, reset the laptop's BIOS or UEFI settings to default. This process varies among different laptop models, so refer to the user manual for instructions.

Test with Minimal Hardware:

  • Disconnect external devices, including USB devices, and try booting the laptop with minimal hardware connected.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
