Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to get my daughters laptop to boot but all I get is a flashing cursor in the top left corner of the screen for a few seconds then the HP logo appears.

After a few minutes the logo dissapears then comes back and the whole process begins again

Press f2 when powering on the machine and you should load into the HP Hardware Diagnostics.  Select Hard Drive from the menu and select short test.  If it fails then the hard drive needs to be replaced.

Thanks for this, yep the HDD failed the hardware test, oh well new HDD required 🙁🙁

And of course my daughter can't find her OS disc so I'll have to purchase a new OS as well

Are you looking to reinstall Windows 10 once you recieve your replacement hard drive?

Yeah I am, got to find a replacement drive first though

Once you find a replacement hard drive I can help you with the reinstallation of Windows 10 and the drivers and applications that are required.  No need to purchase replacement Windows installation media.  All you will need is a USB flash drive 8GB in size and another computer to download the Windows 10 installation media onto the USB Flash Drive.

Thanks that would be great, the damaged drive was 2TB, I take it I don't need to get one quite as big

That i can not say as this is your's or your daughters computer.  If she or you did not use alot then you can go with a smaller drive if so desired.  This will not hinder anything except how much data the hard drive can hold.

That's great, only reason I ask is because I read on a thread somewhere on here that you had to swap like for like or go bigger, it just seemed strange to me

That is only true if you are wanting to clone your existing partitions and OS to the new Hard Drive. Sence we are going to manually reinstall Windows and all of the drivers and software getting one the exact same size is not required.
