Hi,

I own a HP laptop and recently I have not been able to power the laptop on. I removed the battery and used the AC adapter and it still won't turn on. The white power light won't even turn on.

Could you please advise me what could be causing this problem ? Is it a battery problem or could it be caused by a computer virus ? My anti-virus expired and I didn't renew it. Could this have caused the problem ?

Should I buy a new battery or is something else causing this problem ?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Brian

Hi there @Kaleido172, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your laptop won’t power on. Let’s walk through some steps to help identify the cause and get your device working again.

Basic Troubleshooting Steps

Perform a Hard Reset (Power Drain):

  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Reconnect only the AC adapter (leave the battery out) and try powering on.

Check the Power Adapter and Charging Port:

  • Ensure the AC adapter is working. Try a different compatible HP adapter if available.
  • Inspect the charging port for damage, debris, or looseness.

Look for LED Indicators:

  • When you plug in the charger, do any lights turn on (near the charging port, keyboard, or caps lock)?
  • If no lights appear, it could indicate a power delivery issue or motherboard fault.

Try a BIOS Recovery (if applicable):

  • Press and hold Windows key + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release the power button but keep holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
  • If successful, the BIOS recovery screen should appear.

Common Causes of No Power Issues

  • Battery failure: If the battery is dead and the laptop doesn’t work even with AC power, the issue may lie elsewhere.
  • Power circuit or motherboard failure: If no lights turn on at all, this is a possibility.
  • Loose internal connections: RAM or other components may be improperly seated.
  • Virus or software issues: These do not prevent the laptop from powering on. A virus can affect performance after boot, but not the power-on process.
