HP mini 5103 N455
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

I need the location of the BIOS chip on the HP mini 5103, so I can reflash firmware.

There are several chips on the board that it can be, and I need to know which one is correct before buying a clip and flashing firmware.

Hi @Cyr09

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand you are trying to identify the BIOS/firmware chip on an HP Mini 5103 with the Intel Atom N455 before purchasing a programming clip or attempting a direct reflash. Since several similar ICs can be present on the system board, identifying the correct component first is important.

HP provides the HP Mini 5103 Maintenance and Service Guide for this model. However, the available HP documentation does not identify the physical BIOS EEPROM/SPI flash IC by board location, reference designator, package, or chip marking.

For that reason, I would not recommend selecting one of the 8-pin devices based only on its appearance or location. Doing so could result in programming a different EEPROM or other device.

Recommended HP-supported approach

  1. Start with the HP Mini 5103 support and manuals page. It includes the HP Mini 5103 Maintenance and Service Guide.
  2. Check the exact product number and system-board configuration before applying firmware. HP's support page specifically requests the product number to identify the product configuration.
  3. If the Mini still starts sufficiently to perform a normal BIOS update, use HP's BIOS update method rather than directly programming the system-board flash device.
  4. HP also lists a System BIOS Update F.50 support document covering select HP Mini and other HP commercial notebook models. The exact applicability should be determined for the specific product configuration before applying it.

About using a clip/programmer

I could not find an HP document that specifies something equivalent to“Uxx is the BIOS chip” for the Mini 5103. Therefore, I don't want to give you an unverified chip number or motherboard location that could lead you to program the wrong IC.

If the purpose is recovering a Mini 5103 that no longer boots after a failed BIOS update, the safer path is to use the HP-documented BIOS recovery/update options applicable to this model rather than purchasing an SPI clip based on an unidentified motherboard IC.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
