Last night my computer updated and after restarting it won't let me past the lockscreen. There isn't a mouse showing up and the computer won't respond to anything. I tried restarting the computer multiple times and nothing has worked. I'm a college student and have important files on this computer that I need access to.

What you can do is to try if the Startup Repair could get you going again.

Do as follows:

1. Keep hitting the Esc key when you switch on the computer until you get the HP Startup Menu

2. Press F11 for System Recovery

3. When the recovery environment (hopefully) starts after a while select Troubleshoot

4. Select Advanced Options

5. Select Startup Repair

6. Choose your account

7. Enter your password

8. The diagnose will start and hopefully your problem will be solved

9. If not you can select Advanced options and go back selecting Troubleshoot again and Choose Advanced options, there you can try going back to a previous System Restore Point

People are using their precious remaining lifetime to try and help, so it is common courtesy to come back and tell what the solution eventually was even if you found it elsewhere. It is for the benefit of everyone.
