so i think i messed up the bios becuase it seems to no longer boot from any usb or CD/DVD. i tried loading setup defaults.

this is an HP pavilion DV5 from mid 2009-2010. and the usb not wanting to boot is a problem for me. the new 2TB harddrive i got has nothing on it. im trying to install windows XP from 2001 but i wont boot from the USB. and yes it is a bootble USB flash. can anyone help thanks!

So you are tapping F9 when you switch the computer on and it won't let you select the USB or does it get stuck somewhere while trying to boot?

Often you get better results when you create the USB using Rufus from a bootable .iso file.

It should be an NTFS file system on a MBR partitioned USB drive when you are finished.

it lets me boot but wont run the setup's or wont even register the usb at all.

might i add i did use rufus to create the flash.

but im going to try to see if it only boots from a flash drive on its propor operating system

You should be able to install XP from a Rufus created bootable FreeDOS stick as well. Copy the XP installation files folder  i386 on to the USB, create a FAT32 volume on the hard disk and  copy the i386 folder over and then start the WINNT command in the hard disk folder.
