Laptop powers up and goes black screen after 20-30 seconds if no keys are pressed. After that time it will black screen very quickly but if I lightly press the power button twice the screen will come back until I lose it totally. When I connect an external hdmi monitor it works without a problem.
I have made changes in power saving within the Windows program for the moniton to never shutdown but that doesn't help. I can't get into the bios setup to check if something was changed to cause the time out, because the screen times out quickly and no pressing the power button works.

Hi @rgdiz,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion 17 laptop is experiencing an issue where the internal display goes black after a short period, while an external monitor connected via HDMI works without any problems. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to diagnose and potentially fix the issue.
Check Display Settings:
- Ensure that the laptop is not set to output only to the external monitor. You can switch between display modes by pressing Windows + P and selecting "Duplicate" or "Extend."
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Sometimes outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues. Update your graphics drivers through the Device Manager or by downloading the latest drivers from the HP or the GPU manufacturer's website (Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA).
BIOS Update:
- Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop. You can download the latest BIOS from the HP support website. Follow the instructions carefully to update the BIOS.
Power Settings in BIOS:
- Since you can't access the BIOS due to the screen timing out, try connecting the external monitor before powering on the laptop. Use the external monitor to access the BIOS by pressing Esc or F10 (the key may vary) during startup.
- Once in the BIOS, navigate to the power management settings and check if there are any settings that might be causing the display to turn off.
Check for Overheating:
- Overheating can cause the display to shut off to protect the hardware. Ensure the laptop's cooling vents are not blocked and consider using compressed air to clean out any dust.
Run Hardware Diagnostics:
- HP laptops often come with built-in hardware diagnostics. Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears. Then press F2 to run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Check for any display or hardware issues.
Reset Display Settings:
- Sometimes resetting display settings can help. Boot into Safe Mode by restarting your laptop and pressing F8 (or Shift + F8) during startup. Once in Safe Mode, reset the display settings to default.
Check for Loose Connections:
- If you're comfortable opening your laptop, check if the display cable (LVDS/eDP cable) connecting the motherboard to the screen is securely connected. A loose connection can cause intermittent display issues.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify whether the issue is software-related or a hardware problem with the internal display.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
