HP Notebook - 15-f272wm (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I have an HP laptop model= 15-f272wm that I forgot the password to so I was going to do a factory recovery with the USB recovery drive that I bought from HP. It goes through most of the process but at the end gives me a message saying no operating system was found on the hard drive.  I've tried this over and over and it just keeps doing the same thing. I have used the HP Diagnostics to check the memory and the hard drive and it shows everything is fine. The laptop was working just fine the last time I used it. This is the first time I have ever used or even tried the USB Recovery drive.

Hi, @CrazyOneToo

You are getting the 'no operating system was found on the hard drive' message because the HP recovery USB flash drive erased the contents of the drive during the recovery process and failed at that point, leaving you high and dry.

You won't be able to get the recovery media to work.

It happens more than you would imagine.

The only way you will be able to use your notebook again would be to make a bootable W10 installation USB flash drive with the Microsoft media creation tool from the link below:

Download Windows 10

HP has retired support for your notebook since it is more than 10 years old so HP will not have any drivers for it available.

If you need to install drivers for any missing devices after you reinstall Windows, please let me know the device descriptions and hardware IDs from the device manager and I should be able to help you with finding the drivers for those devices.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware IDs for a device.

How to Find Drivers for Unknown Devices in the Device Manager

After your notebook is back up and running, make sure you enroll your PC in Microsoft's ESU program, so you continue to get security updates for W10 into October of 2027.

I don't have a recovery drive that I made from my laptop. I have a USB recovery drive that I bought from HP.

If I hadn't already used the HP USB recovery drive I might be able to make a recovery drive to use from my laptop.

But the first step when running it is for it to format my hard drive so that isn't an option.

So HP sold me a useless piece of plastic?
