HP Pavilion

On startup, screen is black with

Hard Disk Error

Please run the Hard Disk Test in system diagnostics.

Hard Disk 1 (3F1)

F2 System Diagnostics

On F2 screen, still black screen

Version 1.9.0.0 -BIOS

The Hard Drive Check comes back to say

Smart Check: NOT INSTALLED

Short DST: NOT INSTALLED

When I return to the main menu the original black screen now says

Boot Device Not Found

Please install an operating system on your hard disk. (Although I do not have a CD disc drive on this pavilion)

Hard Disk - (3F0)

I do not have a removable battery.

Model: 13-a010nr (I think?)

Please help...

@Saphena This seems like a hardware malfunction within the hard drive, however, to conclude this theory, let's perform a few steps:

Step 1: Perform a hard reset

HP Notebook PCs - Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset

Step 2: Restore BIOS default settings

Step 3: Test the hard drive using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (In your case, Skip to Step 4)

Step 4: Re-seat the hard drive (here's a generic video that shows how to re-seat the drive: Click here) > 3F0 error represent a hardware malfunction, a reseat should help, if it doesn't or you aren't comfortable, please Contact HP as the next step will not help.

Step 5: Perform an HP System Recovery

If none of the above actions resolved the error condition, back up your personal data and then perform an HP System Recovery on the notebook. See one of the following documents for instructions:

Thank you for trying and for your detailed instructions. Unfortunately I am unable to even get beyond stop one as I cannot remove the battery (and hp website says I void my warranty in doing so). There's no removable battery on the back, only a bunch of screws which I assume the battery is beneath. Unplugging and holding the power button for fifteen seconds starts the computer back to the same black screen error.

I'm computer illiterate and have been doing my best to self troubleshoot but none of the options are working for this.

Does anyone else have any input??

Really would love to get this working again.

For step 1(Hard Reset):

As your system don't have removable battery do following things,

  • Detach your power cable.
  • While your laptop is is ON state, press and hold power button for 15-20 seconds.

Once your system is powered on, press F10 to enter BIOS settings. Then Enable the Legacy Mode.

Then save your settings and restart your laptop, it may boot properly.

They you but again, nothing happens when I hold the power button for any length of seconds. The same black error screen arrives no matter how many times I keep holding down my power button.
