The warranty must have expired in 2013 but I never purchased this laptop brand new,I bought it second hand.Its strange how this fault has only come up through windows updates in the past few days..I log on and the windows update gets to a certain point and the screen just goes blank.This laptop came with windows 7.It got up to Windows 10 but some of the updates weren't compatible obviously.Is it because Windows 11 is impending.

@UrbanKing3,

The timing of your disk failure issue is coincidental; it has nothing to do with Windows updates and such.  Especially the old-school spinning drives (HDDs) will go bad over time, and I would recommend replacing it with an SSD (solid state drive).

I would 'rescue' as many (personal) files as possible by transferring them to an external drive or flash drive.

Once you are confident you have saved/backed up all of your data, replace the drive with a new SSD.  Here is a helpful YouTube instructional video how to reinstall Windows 10 to your laptop: (3600) How to Install Windows after Replacing Hard Drive?🤔 - YouTube.

Even though your laptop is not officially Windows 11 eligible, there are ways around it.  If you are interested after you reinstalled Windows 10 on your new drive, let me know.

Kind Regards,
