Hi @Sue1962

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Boot Device Not Found" error indicates that your laptop is unable to locate the operating system on your storage device (HDD/SSD) during boot-up. This can be caused by several issues, such as a disconnected or failing hard drive, incorrect BIOS settings, or corrupted system files.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Check for Hardware Issues

  • Power off your laptop and disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, etc.).
  • Restart your laptop and check if the error still occurs.

If you continue to see the "Boot Device Not Found" message, it's possible there is an issue with the hard drive or SSD inside the laptop.

Step 2: Enter the BIOS/UEFI

  • Restart the laptop and press the ESC key repeatedly as soon as it starts to boot.
  • This will open the Startup Menu. From here, press F10 to enter the BIOS/UEFI settings.

In the BIOS, check the following:

  • Boot Order: Ensure that the internal hard drive (or SSD) is listed as the first boot device. If it’s not, you will need to change the boot order to prioritize your hard drive.
  • Hard Drive Detection: Check if the hard drive is listed under the Storage or System Information section. If it’s not listed, your hard drive might have failed or become disconnected.

If the hard drive is listed, try to reset the BIOS settings to default:

  • In the BIOS menu, navigate to Restore Defaults or Load Setup Defaults (usually found in the Exit tab), and then save and exit.

Step 3: Run a Hard Drive Test

Many HP laptops have a built-in diagnostic tool that can check for hardware issues, including problems with the hard drive.

  • Power off the laptop, and then power it back on.
  • As soon as the HP logo appears, press the ESC key repeatedly to open the Startup Menu.
  • Press F2 to run the System Diagnostics.
  • Select Hard Drive Test to check the health of your hard drive. If the test fails, it’s likely that your hard drive is malfunctioning, and you may need to replace it.

Step 4: Check for Loose Connections (Advanced)

If you feel comfortable opening your laptop:

  • Power off and unplug your laptop.
  • Open the back panel to access the storage drive (refer to your laptop's manual for instructions).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
