Hello all,
I have this issue while installing an 250G SSD into my HP Envy 15 laptop, after I cleanly loaded the operating system on the SSD, and the machine keeps telling me that it can not find booting device. Here are what I have done so far and none works.
Spec:
HP Envy 15 Laptop, Bios version F.69 (latest). i7 CPU etc etc. Originally there was no SSD, only 1 TB hard drive. The new SSD is Samsung 850 mSATA.
I did a ton of research and ways I tried:
1. Unplug the original hard drive, put in the SSD, load the OS on SSD, update Bios, restart then put back the hard drive, at this moment, the system boot from the SSD, but it doesn't see the original 1 TB hard drive, not even showing it in the disk management.
I went into Bios and did the system checking, now the system sees the original hard drive and tells me it can not find the booting device.
2. I shrink the 1 TB hard drive into few sections that smaller than 200G since my SSD is 250G, it doesn't work.
3. I went into Bios and tried to set up the booting manager/order, there is no option that allows me boot from the SSD, neither from UEFI nor legacy
.
I called HP, and they put me on hold for a long time and I left. I have Dell and Apple too, and I upgraded SSD on both of them, none of them have this kind frustrating issue, their Bios let me use SSD to boot directly. There are around 2000 posts here that discussing this issue already and HP still doesn't care. I guess if this one can not be solved, I won't purchase another HP items in the future. Please kindly advise if there is any way to use mSATA as boot drive and keep the original 1 TB hard drive as storage.
UPDATE YOUR BIOS, HAVE USERS SEE THE SSD IN BOOT MANAGER!!!

When you go in to the Boot mgr from the bios screen what do you see?
Is the SSD listed there?
what is the SSD partition table like > booting UEFI or Legacy?
Did you install the os using GPT or MBR?
had Simular issues had to boot using legacy and changed the particion type to MBR instead of GPT on windows 10 x64

No, the SSD is not listed anywhere in the bios, that's where it is frustrating, I tried Legacy too, doesn't work.

GPT

have you tried to disable the legacy boot support? Also i am not sure if you know how to write boot code, but maybe look into the OS manager under UEFI and see if there is code that needs to be written there to tell the bois where to boot to. Unfortunately i don't habe your exact HP System so i can't replicate your issues, I am just giving shots in the dark...

Back when I bought my HP Envy, HP offered either a SSD or a 1 TB HDD. I opted for the TB HDD. At the time HP offered a really expensive SSD upgrade kit that consisted of the SSD and software to make it work. I bought a much less inflated price mSATA SSD drive and installed. I could not get the BIOS recognize the SSD without the $300 kit.
For $30 I purchased the Avanquest OS cloning software and cloned the OS onto the SSD. Then modified the TB HDD boot partition to select the SSD for boot.
I now now enjoy the speed of an SSD based OS and have redunency of a bootable back up OS on the TB HDD.
I will I’ll say that the HP Envy was by far the best bang for the buck i7 16Gb hardware set at the time....
My next machine will not be an HP.

Hi
I’m having the same issue with a HP envy 15 j104
Did you manage to boot from the SSD only by cloning the OS in it?
Or did you first remove the HHD and then boot from the SSD?
How did you modify the boot partition of the HHD to select the SSD for boot?
thank you in advance
