I want to not downgrade, but dual boot windows 7, 10 RTM, and XP.
The issue is, every other OS works fine, but XP gives me a BSOD about not detecting a hard drive.
I thought I could disable SATA Native Mode to make it work, but that option isn't in BIOS.
I would use VMs for these OSes, but those are slow.
Please help!!

Hi @Catmeow757,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since your HP Pavilion g7 doesn’t have the option to disable SATA Native Mode in the BIOS, you have a couple of options to get Windows XP to detect your hard drive and avoid the STOP 0x0000007B BSOD (which happens because XP lacks native SATA drivers).
Use a Modified XP ISO with SATA Drivers
You can create a custom Windows XP installation ISO that includes SATA drivers using nLite:
Download nLite:
Download the Intel SATA AHCI drivers:
- Since HP laptops usually use Intel chipsets, you’ll need Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) or AHCI drivers for XP.
- You can try downloading "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" or "Intel RST F6 floppy drivers" for your chipset.
Use nLite to integrate the drivers into the XP installation ISO:
- Run nLite.
- Load your XP installation files (from CD or ISO).
- Integrate the downloaded SATA/AHCI drivers (choose the correct one for your chipset).
- Create a new bootable ISO and burn it to a USB/DVD.
Boot from the new XP installation media and install XP.
Use a Different SATA Mode via Bootable Driver
If XP fails to detect the hard drive even with modified media, you might be able to load drivers during setup:
- Download the correct Intel SATA AHCI drivers for your chipset.
- Put them on a USB drive.
- Boot into the XP setup.
- When prompted, press F6 to load storage drivers from an external source.
- Select the appropriate driver and continue with installation.
Install XP on IDE-Compatible Drive
If your Pavilion g7 has an option to install an older IDE hard drive or you can use an external adapter that supports IDE mode, XP may work without additional drivers.
Convert Drive to IDE Mode with a Registry Hack (After Installing)
If you already installed XP on another system and then move the drive to the Pavilion g7:
- Boot into XP on a working system.
- Open Regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor
- Change Start to 0 (zero) to force XP to use AHCI/SATA drivers.
- Transfer the drive back to your Pavilion g7 and try booting.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
