Try the forced reset explained below but use 20 seconds and count them out for a full 20

Are there any blinking led or beep codes?

Look at the power or drive LED, does it appear the system is booting up but just not showing anything on the display/

Just tried the force reboot. The same issue presented itself. As for indications the power led is on , but the disk led doesn't light at all. It looks like it is trying to boot up, but when it looks like its going to boot the screen comes on for a split second there is a brief flicker then the screen goes dark. It seems the machine is stuck in this cycle until I turn it off

I am not sure what a system update is.  A bios update requires the  users confirm the install.  I do not want to give you instructions on recovering the bios unless there was an actual bios update that went wrong.

If you press the CAPS key repeatedly,  is there an LED on the keyboard that blinks  indicating the CAPS key is responding?

If the caps key LED responds then try connecting an external monitor or TV to the HDMI port  Perhaps the display is bad.

Try holding down the power button for a full 30 seconds. then tap the ESC key once a second to try to get into diagnostics.

You may have to take it to a shop.
