My hp laptop started a BIOS update automatically and has continued updating for over 10 hours.

Do I turn it off because a message just appeared on the screen about cooling fan.

Meanwhile you can try these steps:

A BIOS update should never take 10 hours, it typically completes within 10–30 minutes. Since you're also seeing a cooling fan error, your laptop may be stuck or overheating.

1. Force Shut Down

Since the update is stuck, you’ll need to force shutdown the laptop:

  • Press and hold the Power button for 10–15 seconds until it turns off.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Wait for 5 minutes to let the laptop cool down.

2. Power On and Check if BIOS Loads

  • Reconnect the power adapter (but don’t turn on the laptop yet).
  • Press and hold the Windows + B keys, then press the Power button for a few seconds.
  • If the BIOS recovery screen appears, follow the instructions to recover the BIOS.

3. If BIOS Recovery Doesn't Start

Try a USB BIOS Recovery:

  1. On another PC, go to the HP Software & Drivers website.
  2. Search for your laptop model and download the latest BIOS file.
  3. Create a BIOS recovery USB using the HP BIOS Utility (included in the download).
  4. Plug the USB into your laptop and try booting while holding Windows + B.

4. If the Laptop Overheats or Shows a Fan Error

  • The cooling fan may have failed, preventing the update from completing.
  • Check if the fan is spinning by placing your hand near the air vents.
  • If the laptop shuts down due to overheating, you may need fan cleaning or replacement.

Important:

🔹 Never interrupt a working BIOS update unless it's completely stuck.
🔹 Always ensure the laptop is on charge during a BIOS update.
🔹 If your fan is faulty, fix it before attempting another update.

Let me know what happens after the force shutdown! 😊
