Hi all

ive scoured the internet for help yet no one seems to have my exact problem so here it is:

my laptop is stuck in tablet mode and completely unresponsive to any attempts to get it OUT OF tablet mode. The keyboard, trackpad, and touchscreen are all unresponsive. Originally it was stuck in portrait mode, after a few attempts to fix the problem I have gotten it OUT of portrait mode but still unresponsive. Here are the steps I’ve taken to try and fix it:

- soft resets. Nothing changes. Unresponsive stuck in welcome screen. No touchpad response, no keyboard response, no response using external components (keyboard, mouse)

- start up with low resolution ( fixed portrait mode, but pc crashed upon log-in with external keyboard and mouse, upon bootup, it was no longer sideways but now upside down)

- opening command box and trying to manually stop tablet mode (said operation completed successfully. Upon boot up, keyboard/trackpad/touchscreen all remained unresponsive. Screen still upside down)

-boot up in safe mode: screen returns to desktop orientation, no response from keyboard or touchpad. Able to navigate desktop and log in using external mouse and keyboard.
- boot up in safe mode with network: no response from keyboard or touchpad. Able to navigate desktop however unable to locate network, does not connect to internet

- hard reset overnight: laptop turned on and logged in using external keyboard and mouse. Connected to network. Yet still stuck in “tablet mode” so no response from keyboard or trackpad. Touchpad still not working. I did one last power cycle to try and remedy, have been stuck on the updates are underway screen for over an hour

there you have it. The only trauma my laptop itself has recently endured is falling off the bed onto the carpet below. Someone on the internet said it could be a magnet or a sensor driver that is preventing my laptop from getting OUT OF tablet mode. I also recently had the main battery replaced at my local geek squad. I appreciate any help I can get. I need my laptop for work and buying a new one isn’t in my budget at the moment.

Hi @M10Jane,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I'm really sorry you're going through this with your laptop. It sounds incredibly frustrating, especially since you've tried so many steps already without any luck. Let’s see if we can get to the bottom of it together.

To narrow things down, here are a few questions:

  1. After the laptop fell, did you notice any immediate issues, or did they develop gradually?
  2. When you had the battery replaced, did you start noticing any changes right after, or was everything functioning normally for a while?
  3. Do you hear any sounds (clicks, beeps) when trying to switch modes or use the keyboard, or is everything totally silent?

Here are some troubleshooting steps to try next:

1. Check the Sensor and Magnet Calibration

  • HP convertible laptops use magnetic sensors to detect tablet mode. Sometimes, if the magnet shifts or the sensor malfunctions (like after a drop), it can get "stuck" in tablet mode.
  • Try gently moving or lightly tapping around the screen’s edges and near the keyboard base. This can sometimes release a stuck sensor, especially if it’s a hardware issue.

2. Disable Tablet Mode in Registry Editor

  • Connect your external keyboard and mouse, boot into Safe Mode, and press Win + R to open Run. Type regedit to open the Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell.
  • Look for a key named TabletMode. If it’s set to 1, change it to 0.
  • Restart the laptop and see if it exits tablet mode.

3. Check Device Manager for Sensor Drivers

  • In Safe Mode with an external keyboard and mouse, open Device Manager (right-click Start > Device Manager).
  • Expand Sensors and Human Interface Devices. Look for any devices that have a warning symbol (triangle with exclamation mark).
  • Right-click each sensor and HID device, select Update Driver, and if available, restart your device. If you find drivers for “Orientation Sensors” or “Tablet Mode Sensors,” try Disabling them and reboot.

4. Perform System File Check and DISM Scan

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click and select Run as Administrator).
  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This will check for corrupted system files.
  • After that, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to repair any issues with Windows itself. Once complete, restart to see if the system exits tablet mode.

5. Reinstall Windows without Data Loss (Repair Install)

  • Since you’ve tried a lot of options, consider a Repair Install. This reinstall keeps your files but refreshes the OS, which might reset the tablet mode issue.
  • Use your bootable USB to start the Windows installer, choose Upgrade (not custom), and follow the prompts. This should leave your files intact while reinstalling key system files.

If the issue persists, it could indicate a hardware fault in the magnetic sensor or motherboard. If that’s the case, I recommend you contact phone support for service options.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
