Microsoft Windows 11

I cleaned the heatsink for the CPU and GPU, cleaned all the vents and replaced the thermal paste, but since then the laptop no longer turns on. When I press the power button, the power LED turns on, the cpu fan starts turning and eventually you can feel the heataink getting warm as expected, but the screen doesn't turn on, as if it doesnt get power, the keyboard doesn't light up either, its like it doesn't even load the BIOS.

I tried to reset the BIOS with windoes key + V, windows key + B, that doesn't work. I also built the bios recovery flashdrive and tried booting with windows key + B, but all that happens is it turns off for about 3 seconds and starts again. Nothing is displayed, no beeps nothing. This laptop has got me beaten, how can I fix it?

Hi @Christiaan7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Omen 16 is having issues related to the hardware after the cleaning process. Since you've already attempted BIOS recovery methods and reset attempts, here are some additional troubleshooting steps to help you pinpoint the issue.

Double-check internal connections:

  • Loose connections: Since you opened the laptop and cleaned it, ensure that no cables or connectors (such as the display cable or power cable) have become loose or disconnected during the cleaning process.
  • Display cable: Check if the cable connecting the motherboard to the screen is securely in place. Sometimes, during cleaning, this cable can get dislodged slightly.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if possible).
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds to a minute to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try to turn the laptop on again.

Check RAM and GPU seating:

  • Reseat the RAM: Remove the RAM sticks and reinsert them to ensure they're properly seated.
  • Reseat the GPU (if removable): If your laptop has a removable GPU, try reseating it to ensure it's connected properly.

Inspect the thermal paste application:

  • It's possible that the thermal paste may have been applied too generously or unevenly, potentially causing short-circuiting. If you have extra thermal paste, carefully clean the paste off and reapply a small amount evenly on the CPU and GPU.

External display test:

  • Try connecting an external monitor or TV to your laptop via HDMI. This will help determine whether the issue is with the laptop’s built-in screen or the internal hardware (like the motherboard or GPU).

Disconnect peripherals:

  • If there are any peripherals (like USB drives, external mice, or keyboards) connected to the laptop, disconnect them and try powering on again. Sometimes external devices can cause boot issues.

Listen for any signs of life:

  • Beep codes or fans: Try listening carefully for any beep codes or additional fan activity that might give a clue about the problem.
  • Power LED and blinking patterns: Observe the power LED and any other indicator lights for patterns, as they can sometimes indicate a specific hardware error.

Check the motherboard for damage:

  • Inspect the motherboard for any visible damage, such as burn marks, disconnected components, or anything that may have been disrupted during cleaning.

BIOS reset jumpers:

  • If your laptop's motherboard has a clear CMOS jumper, you may need to reset the BIOS using this jumper. You'll need to refer to the user manual for the exact location of the jumper on your model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

There are signs of life.

When pressing the power button, the power LED turns on and the CPU fan starts spinning, the LED does not blink. You can also feel the heatsink heat up. There are no other signs such as beeps or any additional fans.

There are no detached cables, no burn marks or smells and no other damage.

There are also no CMOS jumpers on the motherboard.

I tried an external display, but there is no output, no other peripherals are plugged in other than the flash drive that contains the bios. I also tried pressing the power button for 30 seconds to train any residual power, but this does not help.
