My laptop fell off the counter and when I turn it on now, all I get is a black screen. Even after I turn it off, the power button just continues to blink slowly. Maybe something inside got knocked loose? Has anyone had this problem?

Hi, I wanted to wait until I was able to test my computer on a TV monitor to see if the problem was just the screen display and it IS. The computer works fine with the HDMI cable plugged into the TV, so my problem is just a black screen on my laptop. The computer will display on my TV screen.
Any idea what it might be causing the black screen on my laptop?
Thank you,
Barbara

Hi @Bkirker,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Envy x360 might have experienced internal damage from the fall, which could be causing the black screen and the blinking power button. This issue could be due to several factors, such as a loose connection, damaged hardware, or a more serious internal problem. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
- Ensure the laptop is fully powered off. If necessary, hold the power button down for 10-15 seconds.
- Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if it’s removable).
- Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to discharge any remaining power.
- Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning the laptop on again.
2. Check for External Display Issues:
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using the appropriate cable (HDMI, VGA, etc.).
- Switch to the external display mode by pressing Fn + F4 or the appropriate key for your laptop model.
- If the external display shows the desktop, the issue might be with your laptop’s screen or internal connections.
3. Inspect for Physical Damage:
- If you’re comfortable opening your laptop, check for any loose connections or visibly damaged components. Pay special attention to the RAM and internal cables.
- If you can access the RAM modules, reseat them to ensure they are properly connected.
4. Perform a BIOS Recovery
- Try to initiate a BIOS recovery by pressing and holding the Windows key and B key together, then pressing the power button. Keep holding the keys for a few seconds after powering on.
- If the laptop’s screen remains black but you see any signs of activity (like blinking lights or sounds), it might be attempting to recover the BIOS.
5. Check for Blink Codes
- Note the pattern of the blinking power button. HP laptops often use blink codes to indicate specific issues.
- Check HP’s support website for information on blink codes related to your model.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
