Sounds like a hard drive problem. Turn it off. Power on and immediately start tapping the Esc key. This should open a menu where F2 System Diagnostics is a choice. Tap the F2 key and run some tests.

I ran the test and says
Hard disk short dst: failed

What does that mean exactly???

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will replace it. If not a retail 2.5" laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital,Seagate,Toshiba,etc
Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use HP Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity.For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

If you need more help selecting/replacing the hdd post back with full Model & Product Number.

I am out of warranty. How much would I be looking at to replace and would it be better to just buy new?

You can buy a new hard drive for $50-$60. Easy to replace yourself with help of the Manual- in some newer models not so easy.

 Post full Model & Product Number and I will locate Service Manual if needed:

Can I get things off that hard drive still?

@Gkatie4

Usually the best hope of recovering files is to remove the hdd and connect it to a USB HDD Adapter and plug it into usb port of another machine. Depending on health of the drive you may be able to browse it and copy files off to hdd of host machine.
