That is no where near the newest model. I don't believe HP even makes the DV7 series anymore. And that model shipped with Vista-an OS that is no longer even supported by Microsoft.

This is the Specs sheet on that model. If you know anything about hardware you can tell how old and out dated it is. If you don't know hardware scroll down and see where it shipped with Windows Vista- which had to have been 8-10 years ago. Vista was released in late 2006. Windows 7 came out in 2009 and HP started shipping laptops with it.

It sounds like the hard drive has failed in it. You could try tapping away at the F11 key at top of keyboard immediately after powering on to see if it can boot into Recovery to reinstall Windows. But, I would definitely take it back if it was sold as a new late model. Totally untrue.

Time to pack it up and go back to that shop. Actually it was time as soon as I showed you the Specs on it proving it is ancient. It was a nice machine in it's day but that day is long past.
I am truly sorry this happened to you and hope you can get some resolution.

Be fully prepared to argue your case. I wish you could print out the Specs sheet on it to show him you have all the knowledge. There should be a label attached to bottom with the Windows license key and it will say along top edge Windows Vista. Tell him you know Vista stopped shipping on HP laptops 8-9 yrs ago,
