Screen black. Caps key blinks 1 time every few seconds  and fan turns slow. F12 key stays lit orange. First real problem it's had in 5 plus years. Only replaced the battery twice. Uses win10 upgraded from win7 64 bit. HP website does not support this model now. Laptop developed the problem right after I tried to download a 3rd party file. Fan started running full speed and the next time I started the pc only got black screen and blinking caps key. Does anyone have a solution other than scraping it?

This seems like a hardware problem and not something cause by the wrong driver being installed.

Can you pass diagnostics?

1 - diagnostics
Check to see if there is a hardware problem: Watch this video.

Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.

2 - error codes

Beep codes and reset instructions

3 - Possible memory problems

You need to remove all the memory chips and clean the motherboard as best you can with an air duster. You should take some caution to avoid static discharge when removing the memory sticks.

On a laptop, remove cover plate to get access to the memory. If there is no cover plate then search YouTube for a disassembly video.

First blow out as much dust as you can before removing the memory. Once motherboard area is clean, then discharge static electricity by touching a finger to metal frame or case before removing memory sticks.

Clean the memory contacts with eraser, use air duster, reseat memory. Reseat one at a time if necessary to find the bad one.

When powering up the system, be sure to go into the BIOS setup and press F9 or whatever function key is the default. Disable any overclocking and set all speeds to auto.

 info update:

Just before the problem happened as I mentioned before l was downloading a file from a website with a warning shown about it !

But the file download kept running a lot longer than it should've so i stopped it out of urgency and risk potential! The notebook got really warm and the fan went into full speed as it was downloading the file.

Then right after I stopped and restarted the pc I only got the black screen and blinking light of caps lock key.

This seems to indicate a problem caused by software and maybe help isolate and resolve the issue?

Notebook doesn't recognize any usb attached recovery drives, ssd drive or usb drive.

The 2 HDD Disk lights stay solid white and orange no pulsing.

probably a coincidence.  Try a hard reset and see if you can run UEFI diagnostics (F2)

This is how to do a hard reset

  • Turn on the computer by holding the power button down for 20 full seconds then release.
  • Press the Power button one more time (if necessary) to start the computer.
  • Tap the ESC key about once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash.
  • Press F2 to run diagnostics: (v) 2.6 or later is recommended.

Makes sure you can pass the memory and disk test. If you still cannot power up then check warranty

Hard Reset - CMOS save

On a desktop system, unplug computer and press the power button 2-3 times to discharge residual electricity then plug back in.

Turn on the computer by holding the power button down for 20 full seconds then release. Press the Power button one more time (if necessary) to start the computer and  then repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings. Press F10 to Save and Exit.

Let me know what you find out.
