Hello
i have Hp pavilion BU ICTO DSC 960M 4GBi7-6700HQHM17017-ab0 laptop.
https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/HP-Pavilion-17-ab000-Notebook-PC-series/10862170/model/11792512
On 14th of May at night ( IST ) Hp support assistant did BIOS update and 2 more software updates it works fine for 2 hours then suddenly Laptop shutdown. When I try to start it again only power button was turning on and there is nothing else anywhere - no activity on monitor or any other light. I then did hard reset ( remove battery and power plug press power button for 15 sec) tried to boot directly with main power - nothing. Then insert battery again - plug it in , again nothing. There is even no light in the power supply area, laptop was completely dead . Even power button was doing nothing. I leave it as it is and in the morning after power plug/unplugging couple of times , the light in the power supply area comes back , I press power button again - it did same thing no light anywhere / nothing on monitor except power button. I ended up doing hard reset again like I mentioned above but this time Laptop completely died even after couple of hours there was nothing.
After talking with their support on phone and further 15 hours later engineer visited. He opened it up , among other things , he removed cmos battery and plug it in after 5 seconds saying its charged, put everything back together but again no activity on laptop.
Since laptop is under warranty ( purchased it last Nov 30th ) he ordered for motherboard replacement. As I am in India he said it might take a while to get the part as its a US laptop. Its over a week now no part yet.
Okay so my question is what went wrong with laptop !
I want to add one more thing that I did tried BIOS recovery through keyboard keys option like mentioned in link below when only power button was turning on initially as mentioned here.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833
I only tried with Windows + B ( not Windows + V) before doing hard reset again which completely killed the Laptop.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Sorry for any grammar errors and Thanks in advance if you care to reply.

Hi @dynammos,
Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the post regarding the notebook not booting after a bios update.I will be delighted to assist you here.
Splendid description, brilliant troubleshooting and great observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
For providing you with an accurate response I would require more information regarding this.
- Did you try the other step by downloading the bios recovery to a USB flash drive and trying to install it from the USB recovery media?
If you have not done this please try this step and check if it fixes the issue. If it does then you could check what can be done with the replacement motherboard.
If you want to track the replacement motherboard order online and have been given a Customer service order number (CSO number) please visit this link: http://hp.com/repair and paste the number and follow the on-screen instructions.
If you need to find out about delays regarding the order, then please check with the technician who is working with you in the US to contact HP phone support by following these steps:
HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true
(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please. Please note that I am not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps.
Instead, just like you, I am eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved. So I am providing you with more resources and information at your disposal to deal with the situation better.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂

Hello
thanks for replying.
Regarding "Did you try the other step by downloading the bios recovery to a USB flash drive and trying to install it from the USB recovery media?"
No I didn't do that . Sorry this is the 1st time I am facing this issue. I have another laptop which is 7 years old ( hp elitebook8440p) working fine . I also had Hp Envy series book earlier and there was no such issue with that as well. So it didn't occur to me to use usb flash drive when Hp support assistant was updating the BIOS though it said if you want to make backup of old bios on USB or not, i simply ignored that so I didn't have any backup in 1st place . Hp support representative later on tried to help me copy BIOS on usb later on different laptop( elitebook8440p) but it didn't even started in 1st place because that BIOS software was for HP pavilion.
And Yes my laptop is under warranty like I mentioned in my 1st post but replacement part is taking a bit more time to arrive, its already over 10 days since the Local support office in Chandigarh (Sysnet Global Tech Pvt Ltd) India placed a request). Still waiting.
Again can you please tell me what exactly went wrong with the laptop ?

Hi @ynammos,
I read your response. You've' done some brilliant and very competent troubleshooting. Kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂
Please make sure to download the bios of your faulty computer and on the Hp elite book using a USB flash drive and then try to run it on your faulty computer. Don't use the bios flash of the HP Elite computer for this faulty computer.
The bios update failed because the bios did not get written into the motherboard correctly. The bios got corrupted. That is why the motherboard is not functioning as it should.
I hope the computer works great and stays healthy for a long time to come:)
Trust me I've done all I can to help you here. It has been an absolute privilege to have worked with you and to share this platform. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Do take care, stay healthy, keep smiling big and do have a blessed year ahead. 🙂

Still no solution. To sum up , I downloaded this BIOS on May 14th :
Which killed my HP Pavilion 17t-ab000 CTO (ENERGY STAR) laptop. Only its power button is working rest nothing.
I need help in creating BIOS save on usb flash drive.
See I try to create the backup on my Elitebook 8440p but after extracting sp79827.exe (41.6 MB) file disappears .No further window to guide me to next step.
Though older version listed below can be extracted and copied to usb flash drive but I have the newer version of BIOS released on May 5th so its useless.
And I need usb backup of the newer version. So if any of you manage to extract that 41.6 mb file on usb and upload it somewhere ,so that I can try to recover newest BIOS. As you can see I have two laptops
HP Pavilion 17t-ab000 CTO (ENERGY STAR) - Dead ( no backup of installed bios)
Hp Elitebook 8440p - Backing up of Newer BIOS of dead laptop is not working on it
So I need someone else to try backing it up on their laptop to see if its all OK or Whether the HP screw up the BIOS of this laptop model. I'll be extremely thankful.
Regards
Happy

Just wanted to thank someone here, they defined a hard boot, battery out, plugged in hold on/off switch 15 seconds. Replace battery, restart and it worked to restore my HP laptop to working and uninstalled update.
Whew. So I did an immediate back up before using my laptop. Thank you!
