I need some answers on what to do with my hp stream 14 laptop. A few days ago, I was in the middle of submitting an assignment on my online course (I’m a college student). When my laptop suddenly said “locking screen” and then it shutdown on me. Whenever I press the power button to turn it on. The caps lock button blinks white; 3 long and then 2 short. I can see that when I plug in the charger. I see the charging light. Same as the power light is on. But my screen is black. What is the issue??

Hi @Daisha777,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
The blinking pattern on your HP Stream 14 laptop’s Caps Lock key indicates a hardware issue. In your case, the pattern of 3 long blinks followed by 2 short blinks typically points to a problem with the system board or a related component.
Here’s what you can try to troubleshoot this issue:
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Disconnect the laptop from any power source and remove the battery if it's removable.
- Hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning the laptop on again.
Check for External Connections:
- Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, external monitors, etc.) and try powering on the laptop. Sometimes external devices can cause boot issues.
Inspect the RAM and Storage:
- If you're comfortable opening your laptop, check the RAM and storage drives to ensure they’re properly seated. Loose connections can sometimes cause boot issues.
Try a Different Power Adapter:
- If you have access to another compatible power adapter, try using it to rule out any issues with the current adapter.
Test with an External Monitor:
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor to check if the display issue is with the laptop screen itself.
Run HP Diagnostics:
- If you can get the laptop to boot, try running the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool. You can usually access this by pressing the F2 key during startup.
Check for Beep Codes:
- In addition to the Caps Lock blinking pattern, some HP laptops also emit beep codes. Listen for any beeps during startup and refer to the HP beep code documentation for further diagnosis.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, the problem might be more severe, such as a failure in the motherboard or another critical component. In that case, contacting HP phone support would be the next best step.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
