I am running Win 11. I recently updated the BIOS setting. I was on F.10 and now it’s at F.17. Since then I am unable to reboot my laptop and it comes back with selected boot device failed message. I’ve tried to adjust the legacy boot and secure boot but nothing seems to work. I’ve run diagnostics and hard drive is all good. I’ve tried the HP Bios update again ( windows key+B) - but no progress. Any ideas how I can get my laptop to reboot normally?

Hi @SN7506,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern and don’t worry let me help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • What exact HP laptop model are you using?
  • Did you change any BIOS settings manually after updating to F.17 (like boot order, legacy/UEFI options)?
  • Do you see your hard drive listed in the BIOS boot options menu?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try in the meantime:

  1. Reset BIOS to Defaults
    • Enter BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10 at startup).
    • Look for an option like Restore Defaults or Load Setup Defaults.
    • Save and exit, then try rebooting.
  2. Check Boot Order
    • Ensure your hard drive (or SSD) is listed as the first boot device.
    • If you see multiple entries (UEFI vs Legacy), select the UEFI option for your drive.
  3. Disable Secure Boot Temporarily
    • In BIOS, turn off Secure Boot and enable Legacy Support.
    • Save changes and restart.
    • If it boots, you can later re-enable Secure Boot once Windows is running.
  4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics Again
    • Press F2 at startup to run diagnostics.
    • Confirm that the hard drive and memory tests pass.
  5. Windows Recovery Media (Backup your data from the PC)
  • If none of the above works, you may need to boot from a Windows 11 recovery USB.
  • From there, you can attempt Startup Repair or check if Windows is still intact.

I hope this helps.
