Hi! Whenever I turn on my laptop the login screen asks me to type in a code because it says that i have already inputted the wrong pin a number of times. But this can't be possible because i just turned my laptop on. I can put in the code and pin fine to get on after that but it is concerning me if someone is trying to get into my laptop?

@HAWOOGAH, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your concern, seeing a message about incorrect PIN attempts right after powering on your laptop can definitely be unsettling.

This issue is often related to Fast Startup or Windows Hello PIN caching. When Fast Startup is enabled, your system doesn't fully shut down, it enters a hybrid state. If the PIN was entered incorrectly before a restart or sleep, Windows might retain that state and show the warning again on the next boot.

Rest assured, this does not necessarily mean someone is trying to access your laptop.

Steps to Resolve the Issue

Disable Fast Startup

This ensures your PC fully shuts down and clears any cached login attempts.

  1. Press Windows + R, type powercfg.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Click "Choose what the power buttons do" on the left.
  3. Click "Change settings that are currently unavailable".
  4. Uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".
  5. Click Save changes and restart your PC.

Check for Suspicious Activity

To be extra cautious, you can check your sign-in history:

  1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
  3. Click "Security" > "Sign-in activity".
  4. Review recent logins for any unfamiliar activity.

Update Windows and Drivers

Make sure your system is up to date:

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
