Hello all!
I've reached out to HP Support on the phone about this issue, and it has not been resolved to my satisfaction.
I was gifted a laptop in early February, and as it was a spare, I immediately installed Kali Linux 2019.4 on it. I already had this USB created, which is why I didn't use 2020.1. All was fine for the first few days of having it installed, and then it got set aside for approximately 2 weeks until I had a perfect project for it teaching a short cyber security lesson in my classroom.
Upon turning the laptop on, I was met with a "This boot device has failed. Press Enter to continue message." and a blank screen. Once I managed to get back into the UEFI, I noticed that settings were reset and that Secure Boot was re-enabled. To me, this points to a hardware issue, but the CMOS (RTC) battery in these computers are not user-serviceable.
Since then, this has been an ongoing issue if I leave the computer turned off and unplugged for more than a few days at a time. (2 days or more)
Things I have tried:
Power Cycling the laptop several times.
Reinstalling Kali Linux
Resetting UEFI defaults, and changing settings again.
Flashing a newer UEFI version.
Reinstalling Windows.
Reinstalling Windows was the most recent thing I performed, and I'm waiting to see if this issue continues with Windows installed and Secure Boot disabled.
Any advice in the meantime would be appreciated!

Sorry ... but it won't be resolved -- because HP does not provide detailed Linux support.
For this, you have to contact the support forum for your Linux distro.

@WAWood
Thank you for the quick reply. That information is rather disappointing considering the laptop is a cheap introduction to Kali that supports Monitor mode on the Wi-Fi chip. I'm still holding out for a solution, and if I find one, I'll update the post.
