Hi all - I have a new HP Spectre laptop and am having a strange issue. I have seen several others post on similar things but not exactly this one.
I noticed that when I close the lid of my laptop it will not go into Sleep or Hibernate regardless of which setting I choose. Yes I have checked my "Choose what closing the lid does" and it is all set properly.
My laptop WILL go into sleep more if I leave it alone with the lid open - I have in my Power Options set for Sleep after 5 minutes. This will work, but only if I leave the lid open.
If I close the lid it will not hibernate although thats the setting in "Choose what closing the lid does" and it will also not go into sleep mode the way it does when it is left alone but with the lid open. When I close the lid it just stays on and runs down the battery quickly. I know this because I can still see the light from the display through the crack when the lid is closed and also because when I open it the display is on and it is not asking me to log back in out of sleep or hibernate.
Would appreciate troubleshooting advice on why this may be happening? I have already tried restoring power settings to original....The Windows support community thinks this sounds like a BIOS issue.
Thank you

Hi @WPJoe,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you've already checked the power settings in "Choose what closing the lid does," and you've set it to Hibernate. However, if your laptop is not behaving as expected, there are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try.
- Update Drivers: Ensure that your graphics and power management drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause issues with power management features. You can check the device manager for any devices with a yellow triangle, indicating a driver issue.
- Check Power Plan Settings: Verify that your power plan settings are configured correctly. You can access this by going to "Power Options" in the Control Panel. Select your current power plan and click on "Change plan settings." Make sure that the settings for "Put the computer to sleep" and "Turn off the display" are configured appropriately.
- BIOS/UEFI Settings: Check if there are any relevant settings in your laptop's BIOS/UEFI. Sometimes, power management settings are available at this level. Access the BIOS/UEFI during the laptop's startup (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, or DEL) and look for any settings related to power management.
- Check for Background Processes: Ensure that there are no background processes preventing your laptop from entering sleep or hibernate mode. Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), and check for any applications or processes that might be preventing the sleep/hibernate process.
- Run Power Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter for power settings. Open the Settings app, go to "Update & Security," then "Troubleshoot." Look for the "Power" troubleshooter and run it to identify and fix any issues related to power settings.
- Check for Third-Party Software Interference: Some third-party software can interfere with power management. Check if you have any third-party antivirus, system optimization, or similar software that might be preventing the laptop from entering sleep or hibernate mode. Try temporarily disabling or uninstalling such software to see if it makes a difference.
- Windows Updates: Ensure that your operating system is up to date with the latest Windows updates. Sometimes, bugs related to power management are addressed in Windows updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the reply. None of these things helped. Again - the laptop will go into sleep mode. If I leave it open for the required amount of time it will go to Sleep and then I can close the lid and it stays sleeping.
But if I just close the lid after working without waiting for the Power Mgmt set time for Sleep, then it will not sleep or hibernate - so closing the lid is not only failing to trigger the expected behavior but also, when the lid is closed for some reason the normal Sleep setting will not take effect - even though it will take effect if I leave the computer idle with the lid open.
I dont see anything in BIOS for my laptop although I have heard people suggest it does sound like a BIOS issue. I dont see any settings there that seem relevant and it is up to date.
