HP Laptop PC 15-dw3000 (31R08AV)

Less than 3 years old and it refuses to boot up. The laptop has power  because indicator lights are lit, but wont do anything. A hard boot didn't work. The battery was warm when it was last charged and got warm when I plugged it in today.

@KatTG, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since your HP Laptop PC 15-dw3000 (31R08AV) has power (indicator lights on) but won’t boot up, and the battery gets warm, try these steps:

Check for Signs of Life

  1. Listen for fan noise – If the fans don’t spin, the system might not be initializing.
  2. Check for display issues – Shine a flashlight at the screen. If you see faint images, the display backlight might be faulty.
  3. Try an external monitor – If the screen is black but external video works, the laptop display is the problem.

Power Reset (Hard Reset)

Since you've already tried a hard boot, ensure you're doing a proper power reset:

  1. Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  2. Hold the power button for 30-60 seconds to drain residual power.
  3. Plug in the power adapter (without the battery) and try turning it on.

Try BIOS Recovery (Win + B Method)

  1. Turn the laptop off.
  2. Press and hold Win + B keys, then press the power button for 2-3 seconds.
  3. Release all keys and check if the BIOS recovery screen appears.

Remove RAM and CMOS Battery

If the laptop still won’t boot, try reseating the RAM and CMOS battery:

  1. Open the laptop and remove the RAM.
  2. Clean the contacts and reinstall it firmly.
  3. Remove the CMOS battery for 5-10 minutes to reset BIOS settings.

Test Without the Battery

Since you mentioned the battery is getting warm, it could be faulty.

  1. Remove the battery and try booting with only the charger.
  2. If it turns on, the battery is likely defective.
