Hi @MSMALEBE,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A black screen with a blinking Caps Lock button on a laptop usually indicates a hardware issue, often related to the memory (RAM) or a power problem. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot this issue:
Troubleshooting Steps for Black Screen with Blinking Caps Lock
1. Identify the Blink Code
- Caps Lock Blink Code: The blinking pattern of the Caps Lock key is actually an error code. Count the number of blinks before it pauses, and refer to your laptop’s user manual or the HP support website for the specific error code interpretation. Different blink patterns can indicate different issues.
2. Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Unplug the power cord from the laptop.
- Remove the battery if it's removable. (For laptops with internal batteries, skip this step.)
- Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds.
- Reinsert the battery (if applicable), plug in the power cord, and try turning on the laptop.
3. Check and Reseat RAM Modules:
- Turn off the laptop and unplug it.
- Remove the battery if it’s removable.
- Open the back panel to access the RAM (refer to your laptop’s manual for instructions on accessing RAM).
- Carefully remove the RAM modules and then reseat them firmly in their slots.
- Reassemble the laptop and try powering it on.
4. Perform a Power Drain
- Turn off the laptop and unplug it.
- Remove the battery if it’s removable.
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
- Reinsert the battery (if applicable), plug in the power cord, and turn on the laptop.
5. Check Display Brightness and Connections
- Although you’ve tried adjusting the brightness, it’s worth double-checking to ensure it is not set too low.
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable.
- If the external display shows the laptop’s output, the issue might be with the laptop’s internal screen or backlight.
6. Check for Overheating:
- Ensure that the laptop is not overheating. Overheating can sometimes cause the system to shut down or display a black screen.
- Ensure that the cooling vents are not blocked and that the fan is working.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
